A Splash of Color - My SPS Peninsula Reef

Interesting thread. I was reading it and I am wondering if I am OK with the fish number.

I have 11 fish in the display 65 G and 4 in my fuge (20G) . Total of 15 fish.

Is that too much ? I need to add or take fish ?

With the fuge full of macro and a LOT of Seacherm Matrix my Phosphate is at 0.04 and 0 Nitrates. So I started to feed more and added in the last 2 weeks 4 fish out of those 15 (today's count)

Thanks !!!

As long as you're not having excess nutrient issues i don't think you need to chase a fish number, even before adding the four new fish you had a healthy fish population able to process lots of food into waste. Why do you think the phos is so high you need to run a lot of matrix yet nitrates remain bottomed out. You have no algae in the display from the pic - very nice reef btw mate. Do you have lots of snails out feeding after dark, your rocks look very clean. How much and what goes in the system on a typical day if i may ask. :)

Now we are moving on to acro stuff - not fish stuff.

I was watching one of the SSC sting the crap out of the coralline algae prior to encrusting over the spot and i remembered how freaked out i was the first time i saw it happen years ago. I thought my acro was RTN'ing out of the blue from the base up. I took a video of what it looks like as you'll notice there are lots of bleached dead bits of coralline caught up in the net of death making it look like acro tissue in the current.

The second video is from about 18 months back i think when i either spiked the alk or the salinity was 1.0285 - pretty sure it was one of those goofs that caused the frag to first begin slowly dying back - STN. The brown bits that have algae on them that just slowly paled and died back. Just when i thought it was stable again you can see it beginning to RTN where the colored tissue literally comes away from the skeleton in a flapping skin.

You can see the two things look nothing alike once you know what the hell you're looking at but i thought i'd mention it for anyone newer to keeping acros. :)

Coralline algae being terminated with extreme prejudice.....

Thanks Mindy, i wouldn't be booyah'n anyone when i was running a BFC count very close to the fish hater levels Sahin keeps.
Giggles is getting more fishies too....... :)

Haters gonna hate. :frog: It's summertime, and the LFS isn't stocked up like winter, so increasing BFC is challenging right now. I ordered a herd of Anthias. Yes, I said "herd" - they eat as much as a horse!

What up with that Acro you're killin?

 Look, how is the BFC which is a widely accepted and internationally recognised SPS parameter all of a sudden my problem and i'm the one who has to explain everything. You don't see Greg trying to buck accepted fish keeping practices and he's won TOTM twice - AND he did it with a lame

So you had to bring the the RC Acro Master in to make your point

In winter would be very hard with a water temperature of about 10°C or less.
Now here we have a very hot summer..........................:beachbum:

It's global warming mate, my Radiums and i play a big part in burning that hole through the ozone layer so in a way you should be thanking me for that hot beach weather........;)

So you're actually trying to blame your lame BFC on the weather........... Sahin's dog ate his lappy so he can't post pics and now Mindy has no fish because the weather isn't right for fish buying.............
Anthias have tiny mouths and do tiny poos......:fish1:
I killed that acro frag 18 months ago, it's a while back now but from memory i think i was following advice Sahin gave me at the time......

Bfc, 0.88

Nothing wrong with that number mate, similar number to the RC Acro Master wouldn't you say M007......

Yes i did mate - i'm going to lay this out for you and Matt in a very simple way. If the BFC wasn't real then why the hell is someone like Greg - a two time TOTM winner quoting his BFC in big bold numbers ? Are you suggesting he's lost the plot and calculating a reading for something that doesn't exist ?

If I calculated things right??
.82

Oh yeah Andrew, you should note Greg is a CANADIAN :celeb1:

Yes and despite that obvious handicap he's still been able to win TOTM twice - and do you want to know why Mike ?

Because he keeps an eye on his BFC along with all the other important levels - that's why mate :smokin:

I took some pics of the islands from each side so you can better see the scape and how it's constructed hopefully. It was during T5 only time so there's a bad blue wash that i can't be stuffed spending an hour fixing on all of them. It's the weekend and you all know i post gratuitous shots on the weekend :fun4:

So first you slag the Italians and now us peace loving award winning Canadian acro peeps. You have no shame. Wicked sense of humour and a off the hook DT, but no shame :celeb2:

Yep. What he said. That's one damn fine looking tank, Andrew.
I'll be your bff anytime.
By the way, I just added a yellow tang, a pyramid butterfly and a copperband bfly.
I just put my bfc up a bit..

Absolutely stunning! I love the multi-island approach, so much to take in, and just shifting position a bit gives you views in layers. With a big, wide tank like yours the way you have aqua-scaped is really the best way to show off the acros!!

Okay biggles, you have convinced me to go MH on my 10 gallon nano. Its 20x11x13 so I was wondering what buld/fixture. I know I should be getting a 75-150 watt bulb but I dont think radium makes them that small:sad1:. Whats next best?

Bigglefish coefficient buddy. I need you to count your fish and then divide the fish count by your display tank volume divided by ten.

mine is 140 gal divided by 10 = 14.
22 fish in the display.
22 divided by 14 = a BFC of 1.57

Shouldn't it be total system value?

Andrew, you have a gorgeous tank. I still think it must be the aussie water plus your evening poo management.

Wow you take bare bottom to a whole other level. I would love to do something similar but scared to get rid of all the live rock. What do you suggest. Ps it's a bare bottom too but not much exposed. Mostly covered in lr
