A Titan Trigger in A Reef Tank

This is my new experiment.I will keep you all posted on how it works out.I am moving my reef to a bigger tank in a couple of months so if it does not work I will take him out then.Triggers are my favorite fish,does anybody else share my facination with triggers on this forum?Maybe we can chat about something besides reef tanks with local people!!!Fish only tanks are fun to, I know there is a general forum for this group but I would like to share experiences with local people!!!So if anyone else have some great fish only stories or experiences please post them. Im more of a fish guy then coral. I be more willing to risk a fish in reef tank as well. Though i wouldn't be that risky. Cool fish keep us updated!

I started a thread a few days ago about my new niger trigger in my reef. So far so good. I also share your interest with these fish. Its like you can see them thinking when they look at you. Very interesting and entertaining animal.

Aren't Titan's more of an open bottom non reef dwelling type of trigger?

I have an obsession with triggers and have had them in FOWLR tanks and reefs for many years. I have had virtually every trigger there is and currently have a Titan, Clown, Crosshatch, and Niger in a FOWLR. As far as a titan and a blueline.... you have some real guts !!! The blueline can often be so mean it has to be removed from fish only tanks. The Titan is not quite as mean as that but is still a monster. If you don't have small fish or inverts though, triggers do not eat corals so they are technically reef safe. Both of your triggers are pretty though so I am rooting for you whole-heartedly!!! I at one time tried a niger and a clown trigger. The clown caused mass destruction at about 3 inches,the Niger at 4. I know it is fun to try, and I rememeber glowing as I told everyone "see, it is going great." But in the end there is a reason I found that so many people told me not to do it. Each trigger cost me about 200-300 dollars in damage. Hope you get a better fate than I did,

Best of luck to you. The first time I tried it with a titan he was perfect - only fish in a 125, it was nice. On every other try since I cannot keep my cleanup crews alive and run into nuisance algae problems inevitably, the one I currently have (quite small) even eats all the macro.

current 55 with juvie titan. (it looks much worse now, unfortunately)

I only put the Titan Trigger in my reef for a month or two, as when I move my reef to my bigger tank I will move both these triggers into a fish only 300 gallon tank.I am just wanting them to get a lttle bigger befor adding them to my fish only as they would be food right now.

matttaylor I saw your thread on the Niger, I think I added some positve thoughts. How is he doing, I had a niger in my reef but he jumped out, he was a perfect reef fish. I have since put a top on my reef so no more jumpers. I am today adding another Niger to my reef hoping to get the same temperment as the last one. Let me know if you are still intrested in the bamboo shark we talked about when I came and bought some fraga off of you about a month ago.

pbetito I am gad to hear from other fish only people on here!!!Especially trigger nuts.I have had triggers for quite a while pretty much every kind, the reef thing is just a temp thing until I move the reef to a bigger tank.They will both come out then and go into a fish only tank, I am just trying to grow them out a little bit as they are both about 2 inches right now.I would love to see pics of your triggers, I could post some of mine as well as I have at leat a dozen or more triggers. Thanks for the reply, so far the titan is a model reef fish.The Blue line is chasing the sally crabs and the starfish.They are both not bothering the clams or the cleaner shrimp.I used to live in Napa for about 20 years , have you lived there long? So how many trigger do you have? Do you have pics of them? Thanks Chris

I hear you on the size thing. I am currently housing a queen angel the size of half a dime in my reef while I let her grow big enough to defend herself. I am also doing the same thing with a spanish hogfish and a cuban hogfish. I caught all 3 of them in Florida along with my Titan trigger. I have usually found that at a small size there are a lot of fish tah work in a reef. It is when they get big that there are problems

Chris, I am keeping the fingers crossed for you. Both fish are beauts and have some killer water params to thrive in.

T-T (another Chris), those lights are something else, I half expected to see an aqua Virgin Mary in the tank too!

Thanks Dan. Well I am a week in and everyone is behaving just fine,I now have 2 Titan Triggers and 1 Blueline Trigger and 1 Niger Trigger all about 2 inches.They have not even touched my clams or hermit crabs!!!

Well 2 weeks in and they still are leaving everything alone.I am really enjoying seeing my trio of triggers in a more natural setting than in my fish only tanks.I lost the blueline from a parasite outbreak but the niger and the 2 titans are doing awesome. The 2 tangs I have(a prpl and a yllw) seem to be keeping them in check. I hope some of you are enjoying this thread and my experiment,if anyone else is doing a simular experiment I would love to hear from you.
