? about hypo

There is only a few, like 4 or 5 that have shown up,but I am really thinking this maybe a secondary bacterial infection from where the ich parasite released from the fish. The spots look alittle to big for ich.I am just paranoid like crazy. The total time in hypo is 4 weeks now,so I still have 8 more weeks if needed to make sure. Thanks MRTUSKFISH and sandwi54 for the helpful input.

I'd hold off any antibiotics until you're sure what the spots are. If they are infected sores, they will get worse and irregularly shaped & colored they need to be treated. If they come & go, its still ich.

The spots are getting bigger and kinda look like cotton, one of my yellow tangs has started swimming with his head up at a slight angle and is not eating as it use to,and occassionally swims with his belly dragging the substrate. All other fish are eating like normal.

ammonia 0
ph 8.2
salinity 1.008

Cotton-like stuff is usually fungal and antibiotics won't help. I can't help with a med to use in hypo; I'd call SeaChem tech support and ask them, they're great. (1-800-seachem, I think).

Today makes 28 days in hypo, and still have a few spots popping up.I am starting to think I have a ich parasite that can tolerate hypo at 1.008.I am about ready to bring my salinity up to 1.025 over the next week and pull all liverock and sand and treat with cupermine.

before you do that, i'd make sure your specific gravity really is at 1.008. what are you using to calibrate the refractometer? sometimes RODI or distilled water can give wrong calibrations. it's better to use calibration fluids. american pinpoint makes one at 1.026 and that should be used for calibration.

do a search on calibration with RODI or distilled water and you'd come across countless posts where the calibrated salinity is off by as much as 0.004 from the actual salinity.

I carried my refractormeter to 2 lfs and both were spot on with mine.I have calibration fluid That I use .The only fish that is showing signs of ich is the blue tang.I have read that there is a strain crypt that is tolerant to hypo.I figure that if I remove all sand and liverock and use cupermine that it will rid me of the ich, since silicone doesn't absorb copper I can still use my tank as a reef tank...I have cuprsorb to remove the cupermine once the treatment is over.
