Yes what a stand up guy skip...NOT. Like I said I work retail and bend over backwards to help customers recoup their loses even when it is their mistake. That is how they learn and I build a stronger relationship with them in the future. I am in a business where these kind of mistakes can have serious and life and death consequenses and my customers have never been allowed to pay for an honest mistake or even misjudgement on their part.

I'm a little confused Steve. I am unsure of what outcome you want out of this thread. Correct me if I'm wrong(and I'm sure you will) but you're a pharmacist. What kind of outstanding customer service could you possibly provide. You look at a script, get the drug, fill the order and ask the patient if they have ever taken it before. Plus, here's the kicker, I have NEVER gone to a pharmacy and when the drug I get isn't the right one, I get to take the unused medicine back. You pay for it, its yours whether it is the right one or not. Plus you get to pay for the correct drug in addition to keeping something that you don't need. You're comparing apples to oranges by putting those 2 types of customer service in a parallel. What you could do is look at it from a PROFESSIONAL stand point. Knowledge is power in the medical field. Especially with drug interactions. With that said don't you think it's time for you to accept some responsibility and admit that this was partly your fault? That you did not do your research and attain the knowledge about that specific animal? I think there are a lot of people that probably feel like I feel about this. Skip stood up and was a man. He said "you know what, I was wrong in this and I am going to admit to it and make it right." What steps are you doing to make this right? Please end this nonsense

Only the thread starter can request that it be closed, unless there is objectionable material in it that violates the UA.

OH ONE OTHER THING ... how offten do you see me get involed in this kind of thing.... not very... yeah I see both sides. but steve your starting to sound like a jerk. I am sorry but I call em as a see em. WE HEAR YOU... does that make it some how better. if not I feel sorry for you.

So pressure was put on SKIP to flush his store policy, that is clearly posted and should be not be flexible due to and undesirable fish behavior, and he did it? what more is there to be said about SKIP. I had a yellow watchman die, after the dude at petco mauled him trying to put the little guy in the bag, after only about 30hrs. IT WAS MY FAULT FOR WANTING HIM SO BAD AND TAKING HIM HOME AFTER WHAT I WITNESSED AND HOW STRESSED HE WAS. Petco has no live garuntee on salt fish and I respected it because it is CLEARLY posted on the back of my yellow card from them. Policies are Policies. If they are posted for all to view, they should not be challenged, especially after being warned that your fish may host your frogspawn.

SKIP, with the world we live in today, I know a banner guy that can make you a nice banner with all of your store policies for around $100. It will be a nice weather resistant canvas type with those stout metal grommets. It is pretty big at 36"x48". Let me know and I can make a phone call.

Ok Steve, I tried to break this down for you, but you just don't seem to be getting it....

Listen up all you other newbies. This advice will serve you equally well.

<sermon>

1) Do not make the mistake of taking anything you hear from an LFS employee as gospel. For every piece of advice you receive from anybody in this hobby, go and find at least two more senior hobbyists to concur the point. Research, research, research!
Nobody on Earth has this hobby completely figured out. People with 20+ years experience still crash tanks, and they still occasionally kill livestock. That's an unavoidable fact.

Many (most) of the lessons we learn in this hobby have financial impact. That, again, is an avoidable fact. As a newer member of the hobby, these lessons are often more painful. Neither Skip, Chris, nor any other LFS employee owe you the value of their experience. They offer that as a supporting service to the sale.

The kicker here is that you didn't get poor advice from Chris. You got sound advice, and it doesn't sound like it was burdened with a sales pitch (again, quite rare. Many LFS employees will "tilt" their advice toward the likelihood of making the sale).

In my opinion, You could have kept the clown with the FrogSpawn and everything would have very likely worked out just great. As to the quality of the resolution, you are frankly lucky it was ATR you did business with because there are only two stores in town that would have given you any recourse at all: ATR and AquaTouch. The rest of the stores in the valley would have just said " you bought it, you deal with it"

2) If you have issue with the way a store employee or manager handled the finacial end of your purchase, take it up with them, or in the abscence of resolution, the Better Business Bureau. Don't come onto an online forum trying to rally support, because these exercises always backfire. If everyone on this forum shared your viewpoints about ATR, they'd have no customers, and they wouldn't be in business. The fact that they have many customers and are one of the three most successful stores in town indicates to me that your experience is isolated, and not indicative of the overall quality of the store or it's customer service.

Skip is very well respected on this community for his experience, and his willingness to work with people. After re-reading all your posts in this thread, you simply sound like a bitter person to me. I just don't think anything can be done to make things right in your mind. If Skip and ATR don't meet your standards for retail customer service, then it sounds like a prime opportunity for you to go out and open a competing LFS so you can show them how it's done. Put up, or shut up.

If I were in Skip's shoes right now, I'd be very pleased with the effort I expended to make things right by you, and I'd also be considering hanging up my "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone" sign.

Enough with the victim mentality already. Being a newbie does not make you a victim. Your own unwillingness to accept any responsibility for your own decisions makes you a victim.

Just like Steve, I have a first nano frogspawn problem from last June. LFS told me it needed to eat, so I fed it. And it died. DIED! After 2 weeks of being just fine. Disgusting, its innards came out, and this long spit of brown goo coming out the in/out hole. And I completely freaked out. I was mighty ****ed at my LFS who told me to feed it. D*mn them.

Only...it wasn't really dead. That was actually the thing spitting out the waste of the food. My freak out was for nothing, because it was fine. Oops--sorry for my anger, LFS guy.

As has been said, there seems to be any unwillingness by Steve (you) to acknowledge with any real insight the fact that you WERE given advice of what may happen with the clown and frogspawn. Secondly, you bringing back that clown--that was a freak out. You didn't really need to do that. That frogspawn could have taken a beating for weeks before it was in any real trouble. Did you call ATR and consult with them before you brought back the clown? Maybe I missed it, but they tell you to rush back the fish or the frogspawn would perish?

So we are left with: Skip is 100% wrong about all of this; you posted on a forum to share you experienes--the forum has spoken, nearly unanimously. We feel for you, but..............

Isn't the point of consulting a forum to...listen and absorb for learning sake? Why ask people a question if you don't want to hear what they say? So then one has to wonder: was the fact that your initial post was vague intentional, that you wanted to slam ATR and give them bad PR, NOT actually consult a reef community?

So though you may not want feedback, here's a bit: 1) You should take your business elsewhere; 2) Before you do anything else in your tank, educate yourself. So that when you cause the next problem in your tank (as we all do--perhaps you more than others if you DON'T educate yourself), you will understand what you did and learn from it rather than demonize a store/person in a situation where 6 pages of posters say the store did nothing wrong.

My experience,Nothing but positive.I'm betting your one of "those persons" that can't be satisfied.Aka drama queen. You need to at least say what happened you sound like a nut just spouting off alot of crap.If i'm wrong I apoligize ,But I don't think I am..... ;)

I will Stand by my comment I made and I feel I hit the nail on the head.I find it funny all these folks standing up for this guy in his thread .
He bashes a lfs because of his own failure or laziness to make an attempt at researching a LIVE fish .Know what you are buying or don't buy it..
Ive had my tank for 2 1/2 years and I don't have alot in my 90gal,I wait and research ,I don't depend on someone else to make that call for me .When you are buying a living organism you and only you are responsible .
I'll give him the full price of the fish if it will make him happy ,That's what is is about anyways ....:rolleye1: .
I'm sorry but this guy really struck a nerve with me.So put me on your ignore list or shun me if you will .I will live on without your approval.
And if you think I'm not a good guy ,your dead wrong.

I am just kind of curious what kind of "compromise" Steve was expecting to get? Doesn's throwing a store policy out the window and giving you partial credit for something you should receive no credit for count as a compromise?

Not every business has as deep of pockets as say a walmart or Home Depot, who can also put pressure on a vendor to compensate them for defective, damaged, or destroyed merchandise. A small locally owned store has to protect itself from unscrupulous people who try and victimize them. Just because you might be used to being able to victimize the larger chains doesnt make its right. Know a stores return policy before purchasing anything, and live by that policy if something goes wrong. If you dont like the policy simply buy your livestock or dry goods somewhere else. Dont think that you will just buy what you want where you want and make up the rules after the fact to suit your needs.
