can someone explain the delivery mechanism of the zoo toxin trottie experienced

I realize that his was a freak accident where it shot in his eyes, but under normal tank circumstances, should we be worried?

is this toxin present in my entire water column?

do I only need to wear gloves when moving zoo rocks around?

if I cut myself in my tank away from and not related to the zoos, should I be worried that I was envenomated?

thanks if anyone can clear this up

I don't know how it is delivered or any of that other stuff, but I know that if I touch the zoa in my tank my fingers swell up, turn red, hurt, and a day later the skin starts peeling off.

I need wear gloves if I move zoa. Just putting my hands in the tank does not cause me a problem, nor does touching anything else in the tank.

I'm pretty sure it's just like being allergic/sensitive to anything else, it depends on the person.

It must be that... I have torn them off of rocks moving frags around in the tanks., touched them, etc. Never really even noticed a bump or anything else.

I wonder if some are worse than others?

As with any toxin, everyone reacts to different levels. I saw ThatGuys fingers nad his skin had just peeled right off. Trottie did take a direct show in the eyes and then just wiped his eye off with the same hands he was holding the Zoo's with, so he gave himself a pretty good direct dose.

Better safe then sorry... Gloves, Googles, and mask for me.

A box of gloves at walgreens is cheap. I have to wear them when working with zoas or my arm feels like I slept on it all night within hours. I also wear glasses and have taken a squirt to them a time or two. Be safe you never want to find out if you have a bad reaction to the stuff the hard way.

You can do a search for other bad cases of reactions on RC to zoas. I know of at least one on here like Trot's case.

as if I could search before 430am

well, what IM wondering is, if you're wearing some walgreens gloves, the water will surely overfill them anyways, so is the toxin only if you contact it directly or is it put into the watercolumn

here is how I frag zoos, I dont cut them, I just put shells next to my colony and let them grow onto it, then reach in and pull it out and trade away, so Im only concerned about action within the tank andmoving the units around the tank...so if my hands are under water and im wearing rubber gloves, teh water will jsut soak my hands anyways

If the zoas are intact and not split open you really should not have anything to worry about as far as being dosed with poison while your hand is in the tank.

Thatgut is apparently allergic to the skin/slime of zoas as well as the internal juice.

I have issue with direct contact. The water column I'm fine unless I am going to be in direct contact with the zoas. By ripping them off or apart from rocks they have moved on too.
I usually wear gloves anytime I am going to mess with rock. As an added layer of defense because you never know what you might grab on to. Also checking the gloves from time to time because you get rips with the rock being sharp.

Its always best to be safe so don't find out the hard way how your body will react.

Also if you have cildren or pets make sure all zoas are accounted for when fragging outside the tank. Everyone concerned who has zoas should read the thread I linked.
