can i leave them in the sand bed or do i have to mount them on some rock to grow?

You can leave them on the sand bed, but they do much better if they have a rock to encrust over.

Yea, I would mount them.. another good reason is that since they are typically pretty small frags they tend to get lost if they arent mounted to something..
