Acan Lords Melting?

My new Aussie Acan Lords are melting. One head is gone completely and it looks like another is starting, what can I do? My water is fine, everything else in my tank is doing great! I have them placed on the sandbed floor out in the open with medium flow.

Please post your water params along with a pic of the coral if you have it

I have problems from time to time with new acans. Sometimes they are collected and have die off just like live rock. There are sometimes things trapped within the slab of acan and it starts to die off----causing the heads above to "melt" and pull right off of the skeleton.

If it smells like curing live rock----that's what I think it is. You may need to find out what is rotting and cut it out.

I'd try TMPCC or a lugols dip as well - probably in a container with tank water in.. I don't like freshwater and LPS too much the way you could do zoos

Let us know if it helps at all!

It could be related to how fast it was brought in and fragged and how long it was allowed to heal before reshipping. These things are hardy, but we push the limits sometimes. I just cut some last night and half look great, the other half, not so great... I'm sure most of them are going to be fine, but if you got some that had been fragged not long before shipping, that's just one more stressor.

Haven't had a chance to check my water params yet but here are a couple of pics. Look at the top part of the frag and you'll notice what I'm talking about.

I've got some Reef Dip and I'll try that out. Any other suggestions, info or advice?

If it's just that one piece it might just be that it was stressed out from fragging and didn't make it. I would cut that piece of skeleton out just to be safe. But it doesn't look like it's melting to me.

Yeah it just looks like that poylp died from fragging. Sometimes they will make it sometimes they don't. All the other poylps look good though. I think you will be fine.

I thought it was a bigger piece that maybe hadn't been fragged previously. My previous thoughts really wouldn't apply here.

How long had it been fragged before you got it?

I think you'll be fine, too. When I think of melting, the tissue gets kinda gooey and slimes off... After fragging, there can be hangers, too, that will stretch and sometimes fall, forming new polyps.

The guy said it hadn't been fragged too long before I bought it. Should I still do the Reef Dip therapy?

I think in this case your fine, but you really should already have a dipping regimen if not a dipping AND QT regimen for your corals.

The dipping I can do but unfortunately due to space limitations I don't have room for a QT. As long as you guys seem to think my acan looks healthy enough I'll hold off on dipping unless I see more erosion of different heads.

I got 5 different frags, 3 of them have been healthy and healing/growing well, 2 of them have had all the polyps that were cut into slowly receed.

This is somewhat "off topic" but what is the dip you are all referring to?

I use about 1/2 gallon of tank water with 5 drops of lugols in it for 5 min.

Can you hook me up with better?
