acan maxima

yep, I did....and this image got my attention:

however, while the mantle does seem to flatten out and show some considerable size, it's still small compared to the size that Veron describes a. maxima as. Also...the exposed feeding tentacles are of a size that is very familiar if you've kept lordhowensis, scolymia, etc.....it's nothing especially noteworthy.

I would expect the feeding tentacles to be much more prominent and large in a. maxima, just as with lobophyllia. For what it's worth, a. maxima's closest relative is a. bowerbanki.....and on my a. bowerbanki, the feeders extend a helluva lot, especially at night.....the feeder tentacle extension sometimes overlaps the mantle to the point you can barely see the mantle itself.

There's a buddy of mine who has something almost exactly like icy's coral (ie. icy's last two photos).....however, buddy believes it to be a. bowerbanki.....and for what it's worth, it looks almost identical in growth form to icy's pic. I'll try and get permission to post it here.

but im sticking with my assertion - that it's not a. maxima.....as for what it is it, i can make a guess, but it's just a guess. But don't let me ruin the day......if you guys think what you have or what your friend has is a. maxima, then go right ahead with that belief, doesn't make a whack of difference to me :)

By all means your input is definitely valued.
At no point did I say I think mines from Japan. That's not where I was told or believe it came from.
Your telling me mine looks like " a sweet Echinata". That couldn't be further from the truth. Maybe it's difficult to gage size from a photo. A crappy cell phone photo at that. Echinatas are very small in comparison, a 3rd the size of the polyps, mine are very large and puffy. Much larger than any Echinata I've owned. Echinatas grow flat polyps in a tight group. Nothing like what I have. Now to A.Bowerbanki. Again they are small in comparison maybe a 1/3" smaller if not a little more. During night feedings mine have much larger tentacles than that of my A.Bowerbanki.
I'm not sure if you pieced this together or not but all the photos in the other thread are original descendants of my original colony. Some might look larger or smaller in the photos but they are all from the colony that I first acquired some years back. Since then I fragged a few pieces and they were spread threw our club.

i'd love to see the night shot of it feeding....my bower is all tentacles at night...it's incredible

I will be the first to admit that this coral, the one you have, the one icy has and the one my buddy has, is pretty uncommon, i haven't seen it much, but when i do i'm always wondering what it is. I know it can't be a maxima....it doesn't follow father Veron's description.

anyways...here's my buddy's colony of what is pretty much the same coral you and icy have....i'd say this is a mature colony...huge polyps, and smaller baby ones. Looks unique... from an Indo shipment

He think's it's a bower...I used to think echinata/subechinata...but now i'm leaning to a bower., especially after reading Veron...and seeing the photos of your coral....but im hazy. Thinking of it gives me a headache lol

I have one looks just like the previous photos. Bought it as a single polyp. I would call yours the same as mine, a bower. And yes at night the feeding tentacles are amazing!

Never give up right??

Being sold as an a. maxima

Asked seller for a better pic, and he snapped this with his cell real quick

Seller also noted it was about 2" when inflated. I also see three heads even though it was listed as two. Needless to say whatever it is I wanted it, and it arrives on Friday

It does look identical to the pic you posted of your buddies however. But I will sell to myself as an a. maxima :deadhorse:

:)

What you do to yourself is ok in my books! but I think you'll be angering the karma gods if one day you sell it to come schmuck as an a. maxima! :P

but regardless, good find! it is what it is to you - if it makes you happy....who am I to spoil your party!?

Bowers do exist in the Indo-pacific region......this could very well be one of them! And in the same way a. lordhowensis exists in the Indo-Pacific under drab greys/reds/greens as compared to the Aussie a. lordhowensis that come in every imaginable colour, it could explain why these "indo" bowers all seem to look the same boring way (all orange with very minor splashes of colour, albeit greys and teals!) compared to the Aussie bowers that show much more vibrant variation in colours.

ya ya, I know, but I get excited so easily :bounce3:. And I don't sell my babies, just trade or give to friends in need. Thanks as always for your input!

...your cup runneth over, eh? lol

although that last one looks like a scolymia species, imo

Did the seller guarantee it's an A Maxima. If you paid big bucks for a maxima and its abowerbanki, echinata etc, you should have some buyer protection.

Who is gonna do the test for me? Can I send it to a lab?
I already told myself I liked it and wanted it purely based on the pic. Only time I get upset from sight unseen purchases is when they color up the photos/coral. The one I posted two days ago arrived today looking amazing. I did also buy the red one and am excited to see it, especially if its a nano scoly with a friend on the side in that color combination!

Up to 4 heads already, and super fleshy. If it's a bower, then its a big one. The main head is 2" across.
