I realize throwing "recovery" in the title is asking for the acans I have to crash and burn, but either way, I'd like to catalog my acans as they either recover from their recession or burn out. I have a Canon T2i with 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens and a 580EXII flash, so clear close ups will be taken daily to look for changes. We're three days in, and I have pictures for all of those days.
I'd love for this thread to turn into a collection of what is known about bringing back acans and keeping them healthy. I'm not *sure* what caused the recession in 2 of my 3 frags but I'm assuming it to be the LEDs being too bright. The worst off frag was higher in the tank than the second worst off one which was higher than the best one. I have pulled out the Purigen and ChemiPure Elite bags from the media chambers, dimmed the LEDs to 50-75% and reduced the photoperiod to 11 hours (I may reduce it even more).
I think it's important to be able to compare nearly equivalent shots over the days to see exactly what changes are occurring in the acans. Just last night, I noticed the first inflation on my worst frag and since day 1, have noticed further re-development of two mouths. It looks like some of the supporting tissue around the mouth (the oral disk?) has started to return as well. I could be over analyzing and we're still rather early in this process. My goal for this worst off colony is to get to the point where it can accept food. I have rotifers and Rod's food (fish eggs) ready to go and I may attempt to feed this colony tonight. I am attempting to feed the other two colonies every other night with limited success on colony 2 (colony 3 is the best colony and it has started accepting food). The night before last I spot fed it and after 20 minutes it had managed to get some cyclopeeze half down one of the mouths.
On to the pictures!
Acan 1 - Day 1
Acan 1 - Day 2
Acan 1 - Day 3
Acan 1 - Night 3 - I include this because the oral disk area is somewhat inflated, which is the first sign I've seen of that. This morning (Morning 4) it seems to be a little less inflated than the picture, but the point is that it's trying.
It's not that Acan 1 is looking "good", but it seems to be showing improvement over Day 1.
Acan 2 - Day 1
Acan 2 - Day 2
Acan 2 - Day 3
This colony had the left middle head eat a small portion of cyclopeeze on Night 2. I think a majority of the color change appearance comes from the "hotness" of the flash. While it was always at the same setting, slight changes in the angle could cause color temperature change (look at the rocks or other areas of the picture to confirm). However, it did seem like a little more white and "swirl" was showing up.
Acan 3 - Day 1 (this is the "healthy" colony)
Acan 3 - Day 2
Acan 3 - Day 3
I apologize for the hot spots in this picture, it's a bit over exposed.
