Acan Recovery Thread

I realize throwing "recovery" in the title is asking for the acans I have to crash and burn, but either way, I'd like to catalog my acans as they either recover from their recession or burn out. I have a Canon T2i with 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens and a 580EXII flash, so clear close ups will be taken daily to look for changes. We're three days in, and I have pictures for all of those days.

I'd love for this thread to turn into a collection of what is known about bringing back acans and keeping them healthy. I'm not *sure* what caused the recession in 2 of my 3 frags but I'm assuming it to be the LEDs being too bright. The worst off frag was higher in the tank than the second worst off one which was higher than the best one. I have pulled out the Purigen and ChemiPure Elite bags from the media chambers, dimmed the LEDs to 50-75% and reduced the photoperiod to 11 hours (I may reduce it even more).

I think it's important to be able to compare nearly equivalent shots over the days to see exactly what changes are occurring in the acans. Just last night, I noticed the first inflation on my worst frag and since day 1, have noticed further re-development of two mouths. It looks like some of the supporting tissue around the mouth (the oral disk?) has started to return as well. I could be over analyzing and we're still rather early in this process. My goal for this worst off colony is to get to the point where it can accept food. I have rotifers and Rod's food (fish eggs) ready to go and I may attempt to feed this colony tonight. I am attempting to feed the other two colonies every other night with limited success on colony 2 (colony 3 is the best colony and it has started accepting food). The night before last I spot fed it and after 20 minutes it had managed to get some cyclopeeze half down one of the mouths.

On to the pictures!

Acan 1 - Day 3

Acan 1 - Night 3 - I include this because the oral disk area is somewhat inflated, which is the first sign I've seen of that. This morning (Morning 4) it seems to be a little less inflated than the picture, but the point is that it's trying.
Acan3Night3.jpg

It's not that Acan 1 is looking "good", but it seems to be showing improvement over Day 1.

This colony had the left middle head eat a small portion of cyclopeeze on Night 2. I think a majority of the color change appearance comes from the "hotness" of the flash. While it was always at the same setting, slight changes in the angle could cause color temperature change (look at the rocks or other areas of the picture to confirm). However, it did seem like a little more white and "swirl" was showing up.

Acan 3 - Day 1 (this is the "healthy" colony)

I apologize for the hot spots in this picture, it's a bit over exposed.

My goal is for all of them to make it (though I expect it to take awhile). I should post my parameters...
SG - 1.025
Temp - 78*
Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 0-5 ppm
Calcium - 440
Alk - 9 dKh

On Day 1, I did a 30% water change with Instant Oceans Reef Crystals (my normal salt). On Day 2, I did two 15% water changes. I don't plan any other water changes until the weekend (unless something pops up that looks like it needs attention). I haven't decided if that'll be a 15% or 30% yet.

The LEDs were dimmed and photoperiod reduced to 11 hours actinics, 9 hours white. I also removed the Purigen and Chemipure Elite. I suspect the Chemipure was exhausted as it's been in the tank 4 months. I had just regenerated the Purigen, but to rule out possible contamination issues... it was removed.

I've never seen an acan survive once the skeleton turns pink like Acan 1. I donno what causes it, and i hope yours pulls thru.

I hope it pulls through as well. It never "turned pink", it just always was pink. The original had a lot of red in it, I had assumed this was related. I'll definitely be watching it carefully. Think rotifers and Rod's Food (fish eggs) would be good to try to feed it tonight?

I also decided to attempt the Rod's Food and rotifers...
I assume this is a normal acan feeding response?

(Even though it isn't the topic if the thread... even the candy cane that's looking lack luster was eating)

Acan 1 - Day 4 Feeding Attempt??
Is this acan attempting to eat? It certainly looks like it!
Acan1Day4FeedingTime3.jpg

This certainly looks like an effort to eat. If so, this is wonderful news. Granted, I flooded over the top of the acan with rotifers and Rod's Food and left the flow off for 25 minutes.

Pretty sure #3 will make it, and #2 has some hope. I'd say #1 is a goner. You have them in low flow?

Great pics and a good thread idea. I also have three acan frags that I'm nursing back to health. Not quite as bad as your first two though.

What size tank are they in? Parameters?

Yes low flow. It's a 29 gal Biocube.

Dimmed LEDs and cut photoperiod by 3 hours. Feeding Rods Food fish eggs and rotifers

There was actually almost full inflation of the oral disk area.
Acan 2 Day 5

Acan 3 Day 5
Acan3Day5.jpg

Yeah, I'm hoping reducing the photoperiod and intensity will help

Thanks. We'll see what can be saved. One of the heads on Acan 1 decided not to make it si I sucked off the old dead material. I'm hoping the one head can make it but I'm not expecting it

Good luck with the acans. Any pics today?

I do. I did an iodine dip this afternoon (just finished actually). I decided this should be done because one of the seemingly "ok" mouths disintegrated over night (I siphoned it off the skeleton this morning). The dip was relatively quick 5-10 minutes then a rinse. Acan 1 and 2 were the only ones dipped and they, of course, didn't seem to like it much. A lot of the loose tissue that was on Acan 1 came off, which I figure it was basically rotting tissue anyway. This should help local conditions if the remaining parts can survive. I was going to give them an hour or so to recover a bit before taking pictures, but I did take pre-dip pictures and post-dip pictures might be useful as well.

It doesn't look too happy, but some of the tissue that was there was clearly rotting...

Acan 1 - Day 6 - PostFeed, you can see the fish eggs and rotifers on the acan

Acan 2 - Day 6 - PostFeed - I have removed the dog hair... I swear she sheds EVERYWHERE... even IN the tank

Other corals still looking good...

and the RBTA as well

Were they all just tht bad off to start with? I run mine under 120w LEDs 20k for 11 hours a day and they are rather high in my tank, never had any that started looking like these

Acan 1 - Night 6
Acan1Night6.jpg

I've noticed another oral disk inflating... upper right hand of this picture. The one head that was inflating prior to the dip hasn't seemed to inflate quite as much since. We'll see if it gets better, I dimmed the LEDs a bit more.
