I have been keepink a mixed reef of predominantly sps corals but over the passed two months have been bitten by the lps bug. So today i picked up my first acan coral frag. It is blue with redish centers though its not fully colored up. I will get a pic up soon but in the meantime is there any special care i should give to them? It was under metal halide lighting about 2" fr the surface and about 8" from the light at the lfs so i think that my be why its a little bleached. Ive got it on my frag rack about 12" below my 4x54 watt t5 ho fixture and 2x65 watt pc fixture. Its in a moderate flow area. Is this an ok placement for the acan while it colors up and gets comfy in my system before i move it to its final destination in the tank or should i rasie or lower the frag rack? Also can i feed it brine shrimp like i do my welso brain? Thanks in advance.-greg
 
I got an acan about a month ago, and my buddy has several, that's where i caught the fever. lol. i have mine about mid to low placement, and with about medium flow, so it's catching medium light i would say. i would call it medium all the way to the sandbed in my tank and slightly shaded or shaded would be low light. i have an HQI biocube, i will try to attach a pic. the acan is dead center in the pic. it seems to be doing great, eats regularly, and definitely seems to be benifiting from the feeding and placement. colors have not faded at all, though it wasn't the best to begin with color wise. and it has doubled it's head count in a month from 4-5 to 8-10 heads. Awesome! Acans are probably one of the coolest as far as being able to watch them feed and the sweet color configurations you can get.
 
Cool man thanks for the reply! I think i need to get him a little lower in the tank maybe 4 more inches down. Id like to put it on my sandbed eventually but its only three small heads right now and my diamond goby will prob bury it

Lol yea i will get one with my gf digital camera after work and then you can tell me what you think. They dont appear shruken but i really dont have a reference to compare to besides online pics. I havent seen any feeder tentacles ill check when i feed later thanks for the responses
 
Mine take mysis shrimp hungrily. Do you feed those? Do you use a turkey baster? I like that method. Try turning off the power heads squirting a little of the cloudy juice on the acans and wait a few minutes to see if they respond. Or leave them off and squirt near in the current and let it drift on.
 
Thanks for all the replies. So it may not be an acan at all? I tried feeding it brine shrimp tonight but it showed no feeding response. I also gently touched it with the feeding syringe and it was very hard. I expected its flesh to be fluffy like my welso brain almost but it wasnt. I got some pics with the digital camera but comp was acting a fool so i couldnt load them. Ill load the tmw and post em up.im beginning to think maybe they are a little under the weather and need some tlc. Should i move them to a low lit spot in the tank? Or is it best to give them some more time in the moderate light area to see whether i got a positive or negate response in terms of coloring and overall help. Being that ive never kept an acan or a favia(whichever it is) im a bit anxious because i dont have a good grasp on how it should look if 100% healthy. It appears healthy but then again the no feeding response makes me feel otherwise.

Im more versed in keeping sps and feel very comfortable in doing so. I can immediately tell if one is healthy or unhealthy. I know exactly how to care for them if a problem arises. I know where they need to be placed in my tank to thrive etc etc. with this new coral im quite a ways outta my comfort zone by not having kept one. Ive done my research so i sorta understand the basic care but that doesnt compare at all to actually having experience under my belt in keeping acans or favia. Anyhow sorry for rambling and all the questions but i know you guys on RC in the lps thread are the go to for lps help. So thanks again for replies and any and all info based on what i have told you thus far is greatly appreciated. Ill be sure to get you guys clearer pics tmw.
 
ok well ive been reading they need moderate flow and moderate light. so I have them about 12'' below my 4x54watt t5ho and they are turning white around the edges. They had a slight blue tint to them when i got them and now they have no blue and are turning quite white. should i move them up or down? im feeling that perhaps they are getting too much light and are bleaching because of this. I was thinking I need to move them in to the sandbed?
 
Looks like favia like everyone is saying. Under my 4 bulb t-5 I had some in the sand and maybe 6" off the sand. Pretty slow grower in my system, not sure if it is the placement or what but I like the colors.
 
Yea it's a sweet looking favia!

If it came from other type lighting it's probably bleaching. I'd put it on the bottom...
