Acanthurus leucosternon hybrid or aberrant

Well, good question. I suppose the markings on the tail are somewhat suspect. What's really interesting is the blue behind the gills... this area is normally yellow on bariene tangs and white on powder blues. LOL, so I don't get where the blue comes from... Perhaps it will be easier to see some PBT traits once the fish settles/ages?

I am not a hard core tang guy so I will not buy it ...

It looks like a washed out PBT, the head looks dark, not black, the body and fins a washed out blue/yellow. All of the hybrid tangs look like a washed out form of the parent to me.

Maybe it's my computer screen. The head looks exactly the same color as the body. Also, the fact that the dorsal and anal fins are exactly the same makes me skeptical.

The fish are from TMC original It is currently in cape town 1600km from me so I have only seen the photo of it

I would love to see the fish in person, often pics just dont do justice. I see what you mean with the dorsal and anal fins but it is a cross after all. My first quick look at this fish said PBT cross, not sure about the bariene mix.

Copps just showed me the photo today (I am in DC, just came from his house, what a fantastic tank). I don't think there is any powder blue in that guy. I think it might be an Indian Ocean hybrid with one of the Atlantic species... Very interesting.

i do see some albeit very very little powder blue traits.

the edge of the tail
the little white on the chest.

but other than that, i have no idea what this is. interesting though.

yeah, I thought maybe the white in the lower jaw, and the edges of the tail, but nothing more....

Here is a side by side comparison.

LOL, I'm not trying to convince you....

I honestly dont know what kind of cross this fish is but seems to be one I haven't seen before. I wonder what the shop is asking for it or where it was collected.

There is a 100% chance this fish has PBT in it. You can see the the darker mask, you can see the white chest that extends to the lips, and the blue streak just behind the gill plates on the body.

I am not really sure what it is mixed with, however. As Luiz mentioned, I really see alot of Acanthurus bahianus or A. chirurgus in it with the same bridal pattern on the face, almost identical to the two atlantic species. But it's nearly impossible...
