Achiles Tang in Brazil

Hello Guys,

We don't have a lot of success with this fish here in Brazil. What do you can say me about your experience with this fish?

Regards,

Daniel

I have kept one for over 6 years it needs a very large aquarium with strong water flow and lots of algae in its diet. It is very susceptible to whitespot and can also be quite aggressive towards other acanthurus species.

Hello Kinlayan,

Many thanks' for your question. Approximately, what's the minimum size tank to maintain this fish. I am thinking to buy one and I have a system with 400g, with a display with 280g. In my tank I have some tangs, like yellow, blue, yellow eye, purple, shoulder, powder brown and blue. What do you think about?

Regards,

Daniel

PS: I went to your city last July, one of the most beautiful cities that I already travel.......

Well 400g should be fine i wouldnt put an Achilles in anything less than 200 gallons however
You have some tangs that the Achilles may have trouble with especially the powder blue and brown. Some people are able to successfully keep them together but most have battles which leads to excessive stress then disease and often one of the fish dying, those that do have success usually have it with vastly different sizes in the established fish and the newcomer in this case the Achilles, also the bigger the tank the better with tangs especially!

In terms of difficulty the achilles is slightly harder than a powder blue but not by much so if you are keeping the powder blue successfully , the achilles if you get a healthy specimen needs similar requirements , my biggest worry would be fighting between the tangs and how you introduce the achilles, i would suggest a good size social acclimation box so you can see if there will be trouble without the fish damaging each other.
P.s.
Thank you , for the compliments Cape Town is a beautiful city, please come back some time ;)

I've raised one (now 23cm) for 5 years with a PBT with no issues in a 400G. I've added another 3 AT's to the tank over the last two years without issue. If your tank is small, I can see aggression issues but more from the PBT rather than from the AT.
