Acro Bugs, Pods and a Mandarin

I am pretty sure I have them.

Has anyone that treated with Interceptor had a Mandarin? If so how did it effect the pod population and your Mandarin?

Oh, Interceptor will D-E-C-I-M-A-T-E your pod population.
They should (and usually do) bounce back after a bit, but if your Mandarin doesn't eat prepared food and only pods, he wil be hungry for quite awhile.

How long before I get a pod population back in the main tank.

If I pull cheato and rock rubble out of my sump and put it in a QT tank with the Mandarin, I know the acro bugs that may be in the cheato will die off without an acro, but how long does this take? How long before I can put the cheato and rock rubble back into my sump to hopefully kick start the pod population?

I believe it has been reported that the red bugs die 5 days after no host.
But this always made me wonder that if they NEED the host to survive...why would they be in Chaeto.

Maybe they wouldn't be in the Chaeto at all... but it still probably wouldn't hurt to wait a week before putting it back in. I am thinking this method might be the best way to hopefully keep the mandarin eating through the treatment. Maybe I can teach him to eat cyclopeeze while he's in QT.

I was talking to a guy today who had a mandarin and went through interceptor treatment. He said he didnt notice any problems with the mandarin, although he speculates the mandarin may eat frozen foods if it falls right in front of him.

I had to treat (finished thrid treatment about three weeks ago) and have a spotted mandarin. It's pretty fat to begin with, but never showed any signs of mass loss. Found something else to eat, I guess. I do have flatworms (not acro fw, luckily), so they must have moced up higher on the menu. I had a few pods make it through the treatment and added some from Reed Mariculture along with a little phyto and they were teeming again in two weeks time. If the mandarin has some size to it, it'll be fine. I run a fuge, btw. I think having a breeding ground helps the repopulation quite a bit. Do the water changes and expect a cyano outbreak. Mine started almost immediately after the first treatment, but went away less than two weeks after the third treatment (around the same time I started noticing pods again). I was doing ~25% WC every five days or so to get rid of the cyano. Good luck. Don't worry too much, as long as the mandarin is starting out in good shape.

Sorry to jump in here, but where are you guys buying the "interceptor"? Hopefully somewhere online that doesn't require a prescription?

Thanks,
Jared

Yeah you can get it online or in my case a fellow reefer had some left over so I'm getting it from him. I've heard that some vets will give a prescription if you explain what you need it for.

looks like you have a 29 gallon and a 210. Put the mandarin in the tank you are not treating for a little vacation. Good luck. :D Michael R

we had the same experience as gflat65. We have a green spot mandarin that was pretty fat and healthy before hand. It survived the month long set of treatments without any issues. Just like gflat65 said, I guess it found something else to eat :).

Most people have reported similar experiences, so as long as your mandarin is healthy, you would most likely be fine during the treatments. Oh, and I did 2X recommended dosage the 1st 2 times and 4X for the 3rd and final treatment.. and the mandarin made it thrugh and still looks healthy and maybe a little fat :)

I had moved some chaeto off to a 5 gallon QT tank for the duration of the treamtents, plus 1 week, to give the Interceptor plenty of time to dissapate. Then I added it back to the sump/refugium. Not really sure if it helped or made a difference, but our pods seems to be doing fine now.

I suspect pods deep in pores of the LR are unaffected, as they always bounce back quickly and my mandarin has never suffered.
