Acro crab

So..... I saw one of these the other day in Gary's tank and now I want one! How big does the coral have to be in order to host this little guy?

The Acro doesn't need to be big at all...just big enough to offer protection to the crab. It's a symbiotic relationship where the coral offers protection to the crab by housing it and the crab offers protection to the coral by fending off any nosey predator fish. IME you typically can't buy them by themselves, you need to buy an acro that already has one.

I know liveaquaria has them - anyone else? It seems silly to order one tiny little crab.... maybe I could talk an lfs into stalking them :)

I have a couple that came in on some Maricultered Acropora. They're pretty small and move from piece-to-piece periodically. I've noticed that almost every wild-caught Acro I've bought has had them, but you've gotta look hard to see them.

FWIW, like others have mentioned, they do a great job of defending the coral from pests. :)

Some ,particularly those of the Xanthid species such as gorilla crabs, protect corals from predators like the crown of thorns starfish in nature but charge a price in terms of the polyps they eat from the host. I had one in a large red planet acro; don't know where it came from since I grew the coral from a small frag. It was a pain to get him out after I became concerned about some of the bare spots.

Hmmm...Sounds interesting. I might be up for one too.

Gary - do you think the Acro frags that I got from you would be sufficient to host one of these?

If so, I see a bulk purchase on the horizon....

oh Kat.....

still laughing

I'm going to CF on Thursday - I'll ask them about the chances of getting them in. Online purchases still kind of freak me out....

"we got crabs".....

we can start a thread announcing, "we got crabs!" oh wait.....

Um....Yeah....I think I'll stay away from that thread. I can already see my wife confronting me, "So, I hear you got crabs with Lizz and Kat. Do you want to tell me how that happened?!?!?"

The little white crabs are my fav. I had this guy for a while, but lost him to save the coral. I removed him to a different coral for a short time in another tank and he died the first day. RIP buddy

I have been on the look out for another white one ever since. I seen that they also have others out labled as pocci crabs.

Got this duo from ARC i snatched it up as soon as it was out of the bag. The coral is ora's Marshall island blue bottle brush.

sry about the poor image quality, not taken with my new sx20 .lol

see? look at that face! that's one of the reasons i want one.

don't worry Jason, we'll explain it to her...

just a FYI:
without a proper host (SPS coral) these crabs are toast.

JMO: purchase a SPS coral that already hosts the crab. If you can't keep SPS corals alive don't consider keeping one of these crabs.

FWIW I'm not fond of the fact these crabs are sold without their symbiont coral.

gary, what are the odds, serious question, of finding an acro with a crab already hosting? is that something that an LFS would order?

like somebody already posted.... most of the SPS at LFS's already have these crabs in them ;)

They aren't extremely visible. Almost every SPS in my aquarium has one in it. Didn't you see them :)
