acro encrusting

I have an acro, not sure of species, that has incrusted an area of 4x4 and refuses to grow up and out? My calcium is at 390 which I know is low and everything else is in line, although my flow may be a little low in that area. Any ideas why it would incrust so much before growing up and out? It has been in this tank for about 3-4 months. I would like it to start growing instead of incrusting, but it is growing well just the wrong way.

Thanks in advance

how about try adding more flow to it, im sure it wouldnt hurt and it just might trigger branching

Acros will encrust sometimes when there is a lot of flow. They will do this to get a good hold on the reef so they wont blow over when they do grow large. I had one that did this for a while before taking off in all directions.

this is not rare or unique. it just building a strong foundation, eventually it will branch out.

What equipment do you have in your tank for water movement? Do you have at least a guess on what type of acro it is?

You are not alone my bosai "puddled" for about 6 months before it started sending up spikes and now about a year in my tank it has about 50 two inch tall branches and they are all splitting so hang in there. It got to the point where I was thinking of renaming it a Garf monti .

I'm not sure of species, but looks like an ordinary bottlebrush species, I will try to take some pics later today.
