Nice going Kev. The tank is looking very healthy. I agree with RN, hold off adding more bioload until your happy with the levels you are getting. I just got stung by a bad ElOS PO4 kit. My phosphates got all the way up to .25 and I just realized it a week ago. I don't know how long it was up that high. I couldn't understand why I was losing my caps and other corals were bleaching from the tips. I purchased a Hanna Photometer and I'm down to .013 within a week of finding out. Hopefully things stabilize soon. Not a good feeling. Wish me luck!

Thanks for the tips, i may get some yellow tangs in a month or two but no stocking ideas really. Wet skimming and gfo are on the menu with normal water changes. Trying to get the 3 part dosing back on track. Consumption stopped completly. Its staring to pick back up.

Jon, the hanna phosphorus was th best test kit purchase ive ever made. Also had bad
luck wih elos po4 here. Never registered anything. Good luck!

Thanks for the well wishes Darryl. I still have all the frags from you. Almost lost the granulosa completely but still have a tip or two hanging in there and the northern delight is half dead from fighting off amphipods feeding on necrotic tissue. They are coloring up again and starting to put polyps out wich is nice for a change.

The wife okay'd a large FOWLR for upstairs so she can have her large angels and triggers ect... Looking for a good deal on a 125-220 gallon close by. That extra water volume should be great for the system. The deal is that its "her" tank but i have to clean it.... Im not complaining! Woohoo!
 
Lucky dude!! I should make my wife read this :D maybe she will want a tank of her own too.....a big maybe though lol
PE is always a good sign.
Just a word of caution don't get too aggressive on GFO it will strip all PO4....SPS do need it in a tiny lil bit. Very picky huh they need lil not too less and not too much :headwally:

Every time I take her to a fish store its the same thing, "can we get that one?".... no. "you never buy any of the pretty ones!".... (facepalm) Though she does have good taste so I wont harp too loud.. :D

Po4 went up....Scary :eek:
But aren't you running GFO?
What could be the reason?
It's just scary the PO4 went up in a estabilshed system like yours.
Guess we all should be on guard always, right?

Yup! Same here whenever I bring home fishes, she's like "why you getting these tiny tiny ones?" :D
I tell her with hope "big fish need bigger tank" but that pretty much ends the conversation lol :D
But we reefers don't know how to quit....viva la persistence :lolspin:

I had not been running GFO because I've always felt that it's a bit over-kill when carbon dosing. Our tanks need some PO4. But since it's so out of wack, I started using it to help. Mor than likely, I will disconintue once it is back in a acceptable range. I really think it was over-feedin with the auto feeder. I realized that A lot of the flake goes into the overflow.. I switched to spectrum pellets only.. As for being on our guard, I couldn't agree more. Those photometer's are the truth. I will never use a manual test kit again for PO4 if I can help it. Kev, my apologies for the hijack my friend!

Hey chris, yes that is Tonga branch rock, the larger pieces are Totoka and the sump is full of Fiji rock. I like Totoka because it is the closest to Pukani without the P04 issues.

There are 5 pieces of Tonga branch, I got to cherry pick the nicest large pieces.

Here is the Tonga layout to get an idea of the rock scape

how is the piece thats almost vertical staying that way? is it glued in to place some how?

where did you even find this? its awesome.
 
It is wedged into the base piece with two zip ties for safety though they are not necessary. I got the Tonga branch from a local shop, it rarely gets imported here unfortunatly. I bought this rock a year ago and havent seen it in the shops since.
 
Every so often when you sit back to enjoy the tank, the reef gods present you with a gift. Today I received a gift in the form of a super cool yellow sea slug cruizin' the glass and chowing down on some algae. Here is a quick video of the slug!

Also on an sps related update, the flame angel has stopped nipping sps and I couldnt be happier :)

Its official, amanda and i are moving to toronto in august. I will be bringing the reef with me. Fingers crossed everything makes the trip. I hate moving!!!!! I have added a few more acros. Millis mostly :D aswell as a powder blue tang, naso tang, copperband butterfly and a LARGE mandarin (4 inches long!) oh and a fox face. Yeah buddy!

But make sure the tank's packed professionally.
Better....build a a bigger tank you need more real estate for those junior snails :D
 
Well The move to Toronto is complete. I wish I could say that all went well but alas, I cannot. It pains me to have to write this AGAIN, I still don't want to accept it. On august 13 I tore down the main display and placed all coral fish ect in the 75g fuge and used the ATO maxijet as a return pump to the 30g sump to act as a closed system. Everything was double and triple checked for redundancy and failures. I was content I had all the bases covered. On august 15, the movers came and crated the main display along with the rest of the house. I was in charge of renting a cargo van and transporting the livestock, misc items and equipment. Everything was planned to a tee. We left for Toronto on the 16th to get situated and direct the movers. A three day trip. I was comfortable leaving the reef for that amount of time. I would have preferred to stay in Ottawa but Amanda and I are expecting our first child (read in an excited tone) so I had to man up and take the reigns on the majority of the "transplant". On the 20th we had completed our tasks in Toronto so it was back to Ottawa to get the livestock. All the stars were aligning and I was very confident that this move was going off without a hitch. We arrive at the house and Amanda opens the door and turns around with a concerned look on her face.... "The house smells really bad beb..." she is familiar with the smell as its the same one from the last move. I ran to the basement so fast there was a trail of fire behind me on the carpet. Blast through the door on the mechanical room...... to silence... the last thing you want to hear in your fishroom. I look down in the tank full of murky white water with my shirt over my nose and see the massacre. The stupid effin power went out and tripped the GFI. I get the power back online and start accessing the damage. I put my hand in the water and bam I got electrocuted!!!!! By far the worst shock Ive ever gotten, my whole right side was numb for an hour. Note the GFI failed me, AGAIN lol. The culprit was the frikkin ATO maxijet pump. It just had to short out during the three days I leave for Toronto (if you see Murphy punch him in the face for me). I lost everything, It is so hard to see your prized SPS collection slough its tissue when you move them. all dead except the hermit crabs and a conch as well as the LPS. I managed to get a 5 gal tank set up with clean water (RODI and salt were in Toronto at this time) to house the acan, blasto, hammer and a starfish that had clinged to life. All was looking good in the 5 gal after two days so I was content to have a few pieces to move with. On the 5th day, the starfish had perished and spread a nasty red bacteria infection along to the LPS... they are gonners now as well. I told myself id never move livestock again last year this happened but I just had to hold onto my collection. What a mistake. It is apparent the reef gods dont want me to move my tanks. This time was just crap luck. So have a drink for me and a toast to new beginnings! At the end of the day, Im just glad to be alive after being electrocuted so I can live to see my child be born :)
