Acropora encrust instead of growing up

I have 2 acroporas in the tank that's encrusting more than growing branches.
Can it be because of the flow or the light? I have a branched montipora and another acropora that is growing well - but the pump is not pointing straight towards them. Could that be the reason??

That's just how some Acropora grow. They will encrust as much available substrate as possible before starting to grow branches.
It's their way of making sure they have a good foundation and that no other coral can easily shade them.

This.....

I have some that have not grown a lick upwards and have grown outward over an inch in all directions from the center. One has since started to grow upwards and it seems to be growing rather quickly.
