Acropora Hoeksemai

Love this coral - they are temperamental! I think we've tried one three times over the years, this is the first one we're having any success with -either it is finding the right specimen, or hanging with this hobby long enough to be able to keep one alive!

This pic is kinda washed out (used the underwater camera) - it really is a very striking deep blue color like the one above (Ange062):

We have one thats about 6" x 6"...3 yrs old, grew v. slowly the first two years but recently took off for some reason...presently growing v. quickly for a hoeksemai. Likes lots and lots of light...about 8" directly underneath a 250w 14k DE bulb...and lots of flow.

Here is a photo of mine, you can't really see in this photo but the tip of the growth ends are bright green.

That piece looks very similar to mine, even the rock that it came on. I wonder if they came from the same Bali mariculture farm?

Thanks ange!...I totally agree with you mine is happy but its barely grown since i bought it.

I feel ya! I am in pretty much the same boat. I've had it over 4.5-mo now and the only noticeable growth is about 1/4" at the tips and about 1/2" of encrusting on the rock. Are your macro shots from the same light blue colony that you posted last month?

There have been a lot miss ID'd Hoeks in this thread. Look at the coralites...yes similar to a.tenuis (minus the stag growth form). But they are cupped and not tubular like a few of the ones here being identified as hoeksemai.

I've owned two and they have proven very difficult and a super slow grower. Lost my first one....second one was just large frag size....one day half of it died...fragged it down and this piece has lasted what has to be close to a year. Very minimal growth though.....beautiful color.

Same here!minimal growth over the last 5 months. I should be happy though considering many have had their frags did unexpectedly within the first few weeks.

Yes those macros are from the same colony.

Australian hoeksemai (at least I think it's a hoeksemai) that I brought back from a shop in NYC a year & a half ago. It did nothing but sit there and look pretty for a good year before sprouting upwards ( I mounted it horizontally). Now it grows at a fairly decent clip. It's worth noting than when I added a kalkreactor and bumped up my pH higher than 8.3, this coral's growth rate nearly doubled. It's about 12" from the surface under 400w ushio 14k. It is breath-takingly blue in my tank.

xcorallusx is this similar to tyree blue matrix?

maybe you decide.

here is my matrix:

Thanks, I have small frags of both, and my tyree blue matrix is getting the green ring under leds. Once they both start growing more hopefully ill be able to see the difference.
