Acropora Tortusa Colony Spawning

congrats on the spawn! there definitely is a unique "musty" smell/odor in the water when this happens.

awesome! You must be doing something right to have this event happen. Great work and the video really shows the beauty of that coral!

Is it possible for any of them to latch on and actually grow?

Hard to say! I'm guessing the odds are very slim that a new polyp would form, I'm going to keep an eye out in the coming weeks. I'm not aware of a true broadcast spawning coral actually sexually reproducing in aquaria.

Wow!! Congratulations man. I've recently added some sps in my main tank and I'm certainly inspired by this.
I remember feeling elated when my Kenya Tree began spawning some years ago I can imagine how this would've been for you!

Thank you!

Corals usually spawn a couple days after a full moon. Like it did here

I'm wondering if a normal moon cycle would have initiated the spawning or if this super-moon was particularly strong, gravitationally,

Is it able to see the moon through a window?

The aquarium has minimal exposure to moon light, for two reasons. While there are glass-block windows near the aquarium in the basement, the house next door would block most of the view of the night sky. Additionally, my lights run until midnight so that means even few potential hours of exposure.

My theory is that it's less about moonlight and more about the gravity of the moon as it passes closer to the Earth. One other unique aspect of my reef is that it experience absolute darkness on a nightly basis. The basement helps and also I don't run a refugium on a reverse cycle.

Incredible! Have a full picture of the colony?

I should have one somewhere, I think the video in the link in the first posts shows the entire coral from the front.
