Acrylic fabrication questions? I can help!

Yes, you should be able to fix that with WO16, probably easier that #3 or #4 because those tend to run all over the place.

You can also use epoxy, but that leaves it looking pretty messy

not concerned about messy, just a skimmer noboby sees. is epoxy easier, never used weldon. can i find that at the depot?

you won't find any solvent welding products at a big box store, typically. maybe a craft & hobby store, or a local acrylic supplier. Or you can get craftics #33 (same as weldon 16) from www.craftics.net

epoxy, just make sure it is your typical 5 or 15 minute cure standard epoxy. most of those are reef safe once they are cured but check just to make sure. If you google "reef safe epoxy" you will get a million hits with all kinds of opinions :)

probably, at least from looking at online pics it does seem that way. Never used it myself.

I would just use scrap acrylic, you can even bond a bunch of 1/4" pieces together, rip on a table saw, and use that

Floyd, i've seen you recommend that site before and I remember you recommending a certain gauge for longer joints. What gauge would you recommend for a 36" bond?

But 36" really isn't that long. I used 22 (or something close - I forget things easily) for my shorter runs. 16g for my 18 foot runs ;)

Yea, he recommends the 16 gauge with the 2 oz bottles and for smaller work the 22 gauge with a .5 oz bottle. They require you to make a minimum $30 order, so at less than 3 dollars a bottle, you are going to have some spares lol. If you buy weld-on 4 from them, then they have to ground ship, because it is flammable and can't be air transported. They didn't have them at the time I ordered all my stuff, but they have scrapers designed for edge prep for around $10. Might be worth looking at if you are trying to run the bill up to over $30. HTH

Look in the yellow shopping cart box on the left side. I didn't see where it said that and I tried ordering only $12 and it kept giving me an error. So I called saying their website was down and they said that it was because I didn't meet the minimum $30 order. That is $30 before shipping also.

72x24 18" of water so 20" tall..
1/2" acrylic, with 3" eurobrace and 2 cross braces
does this sound correct?

what would the acrylic thickness need to be to do rimless??

I got one of the Gaunt brand applicators from a plastics supplier in town the other day and honestly I prefer it to the Craftic brand. The plastic seems a little softer, so it squeezes easier, and the needle has a metal clip holding it onto the lid, so it doesn't pop off when you try to pull the cap off. It just seems to be of a little higher build quality.

cut top off tank?

cut top off tank?

hey guys I bought a 8 foot 300gallon acrylic tank on craigslist and it has a few cracks in it. I am wondering if anyone has heard of cutting the top off the tank making it a rimless tank and than it would not have any cracks. Is this ridiculous or genius? I am thinking about leaving it around 8 inches tall and using it for corals if this is possible. its 96" wide and 24" deep, the acrylic is 1/2" thick.

I don't think I would feel comfortable without adding a few 3 - 4" braces. Although height is a primary factor, the length will play a role. I find it surprising that it was only 1/2" as it was... Floyd will surely chime in soon, though...

Is it cracks or crazing? If crazing I would be concerned about it in the bottom and side seams. If cracked it can be cut down but since it sounds like it's an older tank I would be careful as far as vibration is concerned while cutting, not to break any seams loose. I also wouldn't trust 1/2 even at 8 inches without bracing.
