Acrylic fabrication questions? I can help!

does a 60 x 30 x 11" made form 3/4 need to have a eurobrace?

What about just using a cross brace in the center say 5" wide ??

ahhh ... 5 sheets of 1" 4x8 ..... now if i wasnt so darn busy in my shop i could start this project .... maybe in a month ill have a slow spot ...

Make sure you leave it out in the sun until then. <snicker>

Floyd: Thanks for the razor blade tip. I finally got back to my surge project and used a box cutter to scrape the edges. Seems to take 3 passes but I'm pleased with the results.

looks like the tank popped along a cast joint.. hence my disdain for cast joints. You can never really tell how much the WO40 (or similar resin) actually *bites* into the material. And this tank was built by one of the best mfrs in the world.

and I've got one going out next week with 2 cast (color transition) joints.. ugh :(

I didn't know that about cast joints. The tank that busted was 13 feet tall! That is a lot of pressure!

The PSI rating given with regard to WO40 joints is for the actual resin itself, it has no bearing on how well the resin sticks to the materials actually being bonded together.

you can make beautiful cast joints gluing stainless to stainless, doesn't mean it's gonna hold.. ;)

OTOH, for something of this size and shape, it's about the only thing that does work well (99% of the time anyway)

Yes. I understand what you are saying and it makes perfect sense. I was just trying to point our that most of us will never build a 13 foot tall tank. Have you heard of any other tanks with cast joints failing?

Quite a few. There was a company in GA a few years ago that was doing cast joints on Chemcast acrylic, and very inexpensive, they were doing well. On about 2 years into their business, cast joints started popping, many of their tanks were failing.

When the Alaska Sea Life Center was being built, many of their tanks used cast joints on cheaper, import acrylic. I remember one jelly kreisel who's back simply fell off when they first filled the tank.

it happens...

it'll hold but it'll bow too.. your choice.

as for a cross-brace with no perimeter flange, it's bad practice, but yes - will help.

Alright, I've found myself here after walking out of my local Acrylic shop with a quote for a simple 5 sided overflow that would be 3"x5"x24" box for $75. All I want is an open top box with no teeth. $75 just seems like a lot of money for such a simple box. So do I build this thing myself. I didn't want this to turn into a big project and I want it to work right the first time. That said, I'm not scared of DIY but I don't want to buy tools just to make this work. What should I do? Thanks...

what thickness of acrylic
would you use on a 6ft by 3ft w by 30in h
with bracing .. center weir
kindest regards

Doesn't seem high to me when you think about it. They're essentially charging material and an hour of shop time. Talking with you, paperwork, actually doing the work, liability, probably more than an hour..

If you wish to do it yourself, it's not that hard, but if you have to buy tools you may rarely use again - worthwhile? up to you :)

3/4" minimum, 3" perimeter flange, (2) 6" crossbraces yielding 3 openings measuring ~ 18 x 30"..

James

thanks for that james ..
we were looking at doing it in 25mm/1in
i will still use 3in perimeter flanges and 6in cross braces .
thank you for the info ...
one more question can you use acrylic to scrape algae from acrylic ?

25mm is even better :)

Yes you can, but acrylic on acrylic can easily lead to scratches. I would look at plastics that are slightly softer than acrylic if you wish to go this route.
