Active reef clubs in LA?

Seems like all the sites for the prior LA clubs are inactive.

Are there any active clubs right now in LA or the SFV? Thanks.

I'd like to know as well. Most the meet ups in this group tend to be south of LA.

There aren't any active LA or Ventura County clubs unfortunately.

SCMAS would be the closet for you. Every 3rd Friday of the month at 7pm in Santa Ana.

Thanks, yeah I saw SCMAS was active but it's a bit of a haul from the valley. I'll try to check them out.

Seems like reefing just isn't super popular in Southern Cali so there isn't tons of support to create more localized reef clubs.

Coming from a city with about 1/6th the population of just Orange County alone, I'm blown away to see there is only ONE REEF CLUB for ALL off Southern California despite covering such a massive area and absurd number of people.

Not gonna drive 4-6 hours round trip to pick up a frag from someone on the forum...

Actually knowing a lot of Reefers personally I would have to disagree. Especially compared to other states. We have a giant amount of Reefers here and stores. Issue is life. People have kids, jobs, wives and other hobbies. It's hard to find a day where all of that doesn't get in the way of going to a reef meeting.

Hello to Buffalo. You're incorrect and to add to what Benny said I need to ask you, "œhave you ever been here"? I've been to Buffalo and our two cities are very different, mainly traffic. LA and Orange counties are very spread out. I live in the northernmost area of La County. Everyone and everywhere is far from me and my area has some very good and knowledgeable reef peeps but not enough to have a club. We have/had several great clubs, one in the OC area, one in the southern beach area of LA and one somewhere in the middle. SCMAS is extremely successful but is 80-100 miles door to door one way and with Friday rush hour traffic it'd be a 3 hour drive to get there by 7 so no can do. The SCRK club would be about the same just in a different direction. The problem with MASLAC was that we couldn't find a good meeting spot acceptable to all involved and it faded. I'd host but no one will drive to me, especially speakers. With our population, need for cars and our widespread demographics it's extremely difficult to get a club solid long term. It's definitely not a lack of passion or laziness that's for sure!

Anecdotally, if there was enough support for a reef club in the different counties they should exist. But it's consolidated into one giant (relatively ineffective due to the sheer distances) club.

I've been living out here for 4 years  I just haven't updated my location on my profile and recently jumped back into the hobby for the first time since moving.

Do those specific clubs like OC, southern LA beach area, etc. simply not have sections on the forum? All I see is "Southern California" section. I was thinking the same thing regarding the inability to maintain clubs solidly for long term, especially with the large turnover of people around here.

Southern California Reefers forum encompasses all of SoCal so all the different clubs posted under the one forum. I’m not sure why SCRK stopped I only think I know why MASLAC didn’t return to its former glory...I’d like to see it back. Its the only club that was a viable option and I’m willing to help in some capacity.

would be great to have a SFV club. what's the blueprint that other successful clubs have been following? what infrastructure has SCMAS built that's enabled it to be so successful and attract members and speakers?

i always felt the various SFV clubs that i've joined and attended had trouble being consistent, but i could never pinpoint anything specific. i believed the passion was there and the intentions and people were always good. but for me, life/family/work also made regular club attendance a challenge.

There's always Dave's house! HaHa.

Seriously though, i'd love to meet at someone's back yard and chat SW but hosting such things requires a lot of time and dedication. I was part of a discus organization and even with so many around us, it became almost impossible to get everyone gathered. I don't know why it is so difficult to make it happen here.

Anyways, i'd be willing to go to a potluck meet any day. I've gone to a couple since being a member here w/ Chefzilla (Brent) and that was really fun.

Im looking to start up MASLAC again soon. I just need to get my personal life back together. Hopefully by the end of the year we will be going again in some sort of fashion

It takes a lot of work by a lot of dedicated people on an ongoing basis to keep any sort of club going long term. You did not say were you located now, but if you feel the need for a club in your area, I suggest you organize one. SCMAS is not a bunch of clubs consolidated into one giant club. It is a local club with a handful of dedicated board members that keep it going. There have been 4-5 other clubs in southern California through the years, but not enough people participated in the work required to keep them going. I don't know how you can say SCMAS is "œrelatively ineffective"! The club has been going for at more than the 22 years that I have been a member. We put on the largest saltwater aquarium shows in the country and many say the world. The local Reef-A-Palooza is an annual gathering of reef hobbiest from all over California and other states. I think SCMAS is extremely effective! I am very proud to be a member and help put on Reef-A-Palooza every year.

It is my understanding that SCMAS also hosted the very first frag swap in the country many years ago.
