ADA 120-P + Elos Mini dual NPS tank journal

That is a shocker! And confusing!

All the talk about how nps needs such good water quality, & yours look so good with numbers like. Makes me wonder. My nitrate has always been less than 1 & phosphate around .o4 & my carnation is still shrinking. I've never heard how you know when your feeding to much or to little or how good is really good water quality. This just adds to the variables I guess.

Not trying to be melodramatic but that news is not only confusing it is upsetting, at least to me. After spending so much time & effort keeping nutrients down just to find out that one of the best tanks there is has nutrients that high & every thing is thriving pretty much turns things on their head. Am I over reacting or did I misunderstand from the beginning?

Even my crinoid has been doing great, recovered very well from the incident where I dropped a rock on it.

No I think it just shows that problems with these guys are multi-factorial. Its no different with other animals. Very rarely can you pinpoint the cause of problems to just one variable.

Are my high nutrients a problem? Most certainly yes - but apparently not enough to tip the health of the animals towards disease... yet! It still must be controlled. So don't be upset.

I'm considering for the time being of just doing liquid vodka dosing. I didn't do this before because I worried about the macros and grasses in the fuge, but it seems I have more than enough nutrients to go around :)

OK all that sounds reasonable. I just never imagined the perimeters could be that far off & not cause serious problems. I know that would not be true in the SPS world. Obviously it is possible in the NPS world.

Thanks
Jim

Actually my NPS did not mind the increase Nitrate. I noticed it will my sps and lps. But everything looks better now that the Nitrates are down.

Which makes you wonder what it is about photosynthetics that makes them intolerable to high nitrates yet non-photosynthetics are perfectly fine...

To start with tonight I am increasing the daily water changes to 5g/day instead of 4. Doesn't sound like much but that's an extra 30g in one month, almost another 30% of my water volume. I don't have any vodka on hand and only an expired bottle of ZeoStart 2 so that will have to wait until I go to the grocery store tomorrow. I do have a large bottle of MB7 that should be good.

Hi Chris,

Everything is still doing great. I have had a very hard time trying to get on this site lately. Sometimes I give up because it is so slow, other times it doesn't even let me on.

My system was recently featured on reef builders and I did a full write up on Advanced Aquarist here: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2011/1/aquarium

This is a pic I took last night:

And here are some of the newer inhabitants in the Elos Mini:

Thanks!

N and P are still through the roof, literally, yet corals don't seem to be bothered by it. I don't expect the vodka dosing to make a noticeable difference for a long time, but I am seeing more bacterial growth on the glass so far.

Here are some pics I just took.

I've had this Diodogorgia for a long time, over a year, had to peel it from the rock to transfer it to the ADA and it was angry for a while. Its just starting to open up again now.

Nephthyigorgia, even though I hang it upside down in a cave it still tries to upright itself

Uhuru,

I want to ask what is probably a dumb question. I quickly looked back through the thread but didn't see an answer.

How do you get that strong deep blue lighting on the walls with white light on the corals? I saw it unveiled in post 445. Before that, the blue is paler. Can you point be to the right post if you have already described what you used?

Anyway, it looks beautiful.

Mike, be careful with the dosing, go slow. I am starting to wonder if some or all of our NPS need some nitrates. I think phosphates are killers but now that my nitrates are down my Chilis won't open. Only two of my Nephthyigorgias are open but smaller. Now, my Gorgonias and Paraminabea are improving and my Dendronephthyas are doing fine.

I guess I am wondering if nitrates are good for some of the species. I am really feeding a lot now that my levels are at 0. three times what I was before and my NPS just don't look as good. Now my SPS are in heaven. I wonder if others are finding the same issue.

I did change some bulbs to more blue and actinics so that's probably why. 1 aq bl special, 2 actinic, 1 Fiji purp. A tip for getting the tank to look bright and everything else dark is to turn off all other lights, including any other tanks. The room should be completely dark so it has to be done at night. Good reflectors help as well.

man you have nice colection man. those zhrizo very nice

Thanks!

Yeah, i am being very cautious, esp since everything is doing fine, I'm more concerned with not letting nutrients get higher than getting them to SPS levels. I have a biopellets setup on the way. If you have any input on how I can control the speed and amount of nutrient reduction that occurs I'd like to hear it. I don't want any drastic changes.

I'm really sold on the pellets. Just start small and go slow. You can really control the amount of pollution left in your tank by the amount of pellets. The more you add the more it drops. I will probably be removing some of mine. Before I added the last 1/4 my nitrates were at 5. I think I want to go back to there. It is very easy to control by controlling the amount of pellets in the reactor.

I'm taking the opportunity to try feeding more since the nitrates and phosphates are under control. Then I will tweek the amount of pellets to leave a small amount of nitrate.
