Adam's 450 GALLON REEF TANK BUILD!

What's everyone doing about a skimmer overflowing when running external skimmers? I used to tun them in my sump anyway but on a larger system the skimmers are just too big.

Im running an internal skimmer and mine has a float switch built into the lid of the cup so when it fills up the skimmer shuts down as programmed by my apex. I know avast makes skimmate lockers that have larger capacity and you can still utilize a float switch as well.

Good call Steve. That skimmate locker saves the day. I think I am going to get one of those, a swabbie which I was planning on getting for a while and pair then with the SRO ex 5000 cone skimmer. Once I remove my skimmer from my sump I can just use a rubbermaid bin for a sump. Just wondering if I will get allot of micro bubbles without baffles. And also not sure how to do a remote fuge.

Theres a pretty good thread on here about rubbermaid sumps with lots of ideas on how to eliminate mb's. do a search for rubbermaid sumps....should be the first to pop up.

I officially hit my first snag on my build. In the past I purchased allot of my equipment brand new mostly from Premium Aquatics. As I learned more about the hobby I sold and purchased stuff from other RC members. I have never had any issues while buying or selling. People asked me how can I just pay-pal someone money and I always said hobbyist don't screw each other over. Sadly I was wrong! Since I had some time until my tank arrived I started buying equipment. I came across a 72" Giesemann Infiniti fixture. I have always wanted one of those. It was advertised at $550.00 which was too good to be true but the seller didn't want to ship. I sent her an e-mail and I offered her $100.00 above her asking price plus actual shipping costs to get her to ship (most people usually low ball) She accepted. I am waiting for my tank to come tomorrow like a kid getting his first bike and I can't even sleep, all I have been doing is reading and planning. Anyway while restless I decided to unbox the fixture. The fixture looks like hell! It's missing allot of parts and the t5 bulbs are just hanging and wont even fire. The sockets are not even connected since they are broken so the bulbs just hang by the wires. The glass that goes over the entire fixture is missing. The seller disclosed that one of the small pieces of glass that go over one of the MH bulbs was missing and that I could buy one for $85.00 so I didn't mind but this thing is missing more then that and looks like it was used without the glass for years, it's totally corroded. I am so annoyed at this. reefing is supposed to be a geeky hobby where we don't screw each other. I am a New Yorker and I am a real estate developer. My line of work is cut throat and you can't trust anyone. I can play the slick game and I do very well when I need to. Reefing is supposed to be an escape from that crap, a place where we all enjoy this weird hobby and have each others back. This experience totally ruined it for me, for now at least. Anyway I put in a pay-pal dispute I hope they help me out here.

This is my sump design. I will be doing a Bean Animal drain so one line will have allot of flow and one will be slower. I setup the sump with the fast line going through the skimmer section and the slow line going through the fuge. Let me know your thoughts.

The tank came at 7 today. Here she is! Tomorrow's agenda is building new stand. The one that came with the tank doesn't work for my application.

Look at it this way....its less room for you to fill it up with unnecessary equipment :spin1: I know if you go thru my fish room you will find things that either arent being used or just not needed but they looked cool so I thought I would buy it.

I hear that. My previous tank was in a 800 SF condo. I used every inch of my apartment for stuff while keeping everything neat and nice, or my better half would not have it. I had brute garbage can tucked in crevices in closets lol. Having a house now with a basement a modest fish room is awesome! We built a new stand today. The one that came in was a little too high and also not deep enough. The tank is 28" deep and the stand is 27". If it was just the height I would have cut it down, anyway and then there were two.
