when you get a chance, can you post more about keyscritters? I have never heard of them. What is your experience with them?--J

jnarowe: As melev mentioned I learned about them from him after he did a large group buy for his club. It took a little while to hear from them after I e-mailed them, but I quickly found out about the storms in Florida. I felt a little stupid after I heard there was another hurricane down there:) I need to watch the news more. After that, they have been nothing but a pleasure to deal with. Due to the fact I live in the sticks, they upgraded delevery at no cost. I believe they will be here Tuesday. So far I would rate them up there with Envision and Oceansmotions in this building process. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m very impressed!

If you'll look in the Vendor's Feedback forum, there is a post by me that I wrote less than a month ago. It contains everything including images.

Thanks melev for the post as well as the PMs on this. I think that if you read above it answers a lot!

LOL. Normally Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m right there with you, but not the last two weeks.

We could sure use some new pictures.

RJ: I think that they would be the most boring pics on RC. I could be the least looked at thread of the month:)ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦ Really there is not much change except a little (OK a TON) plant growth and some algaeââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦ Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m hoping that next week the clean up crew will be added as well as the Foxface and Tang. Hopefully this will be able to keep up with the little issues weââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢re having.

I had the same problem with one of my GFCI as soon as i split up the load on the Main breaker I no longer had that problem with the GFCI

my 2 cents

Thanks simonmr. I tracked the problem down to a bad timer today. Everytime my fuge lighting kicked on, it poped the GFCI. I replaced the timer and problem solvedââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦ Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m still going to split up the power here in the next few days. Today I focused on sleep and cleaning. I was so busy I didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t have time to clean my skimmer for seven days and it smelled like it:)

Tonight it's water changes and maube some diatris removal if my energy level really climbs!

Ok...I forgot. Don't need any tanks. If I brought one more tank into my house my family would switch me to different medication.--J

Keyscritters update

Keyscritters update

Since there was a little inquiry about keyscritters I thought I would just post this little update.

Since the hurricane, keyscritters seems to be up and running, however, FedEx is having some problems...

Here is the e-mail I received tonight:

Keys Critters customers,
We have just been informed by FedEx that they will not be running their regular scheduled planes out of the Marathon Airport this next week. Because of the damage and flood to the airport by hurricane Wilma, they will be running much smaller planes.
This means we will not be able to ship our regular shipments this week also.
We will be shipping as many boxes as we can every day this next week until we are able to get all orders out. Unfortunately, we will not know ahead of time the amount of our boxes that FedEx will be able to take each day.
We will be filling all orders on a first come basis, starting with the oldest orders. If you are scheduled to be shipped this Monday, Nov 7, and FedEx is not able to take it, we will notify you Monday evening after 7PM and coordinate another shipping date with you.
Thank you for your patience.
Keys Critters

I think that there is going to be a lot of this in hurricane struck areas and patience will be the key!

Great work...
It always amazes me when I see people here at RC install there large tanks, and how it always seems popular to place you kid or a family member in the tank before it's filled. I always get a kick out of it, and among other things it shows off the shear volume of the systems you guys install. LOL :D

I never seen a kid swim in a system yet, but I bet some one here is crazy enough to try it.

As always great work!

richfavinger: Thanks, it's been a learning experience... And putting the kids in the tank was a great night, but I get worried that social services is going to come knocking as my daughter always asks at the worst times "when do I get to go in the fish tank again".

melev: I dunno, if he volunteers, PLEASE get some pics:)

Since there is nothing new to update I thought that I would throw out a few what worked and what didn't post. To break things down, eighteen months was a good amount of time for planning, but I think that 18 months of learning tank parameters and water quality would have been needed. I still get confused on some of these points, as I am not biology major or scientist. Let's just say I got good grades in art, woodshop and auto mechanics. With that said, here is what I found out so far:)

What worked or what was a good idea:

Auto top off. I've got to say that the "keep it simple stupid" methods worked here flawlessly. I have a simple Kent floatvalve; gravity fed from a 40-gallon rubbermaid trash can that keeps the sump level constant. I then have my RO/DI plumbed into the rubbermaid container with another floatvalve. I also installed a auto shutoff kit to my RO/DI unit and found that this has worked very well. This was one area of the planning that I thought was going to give me fits, but it's working well.

Saltwater mixing: Right under my 40 gallon reservoir for the RO/DI top off is another 40-gallon rubbermaid. It's plumbed into the RO/DI container and by opening two ball valves, water fills the can. Since both containers are the same size, no worry of a flood here. Add salt and keep the power head going and ta-da. I then have a hose leading from the plumbing and can replace 40 gallons in about two minutes, or just fill as needed. No fancy pumps, very little to go wrong here.

Closed loop: The closed loop is working great and seems to be more than adequate flow for the tank. I do get some diatris buildup around the base of the rocks, but have found that the amount of suspension for food etc, seems to be OK.

Sink in the Wetroom: What else needs to be said here. I was going to scrap it due to funds shrinking, but this has been the best thing I did. I surely would have spilled skimmate on the carpet or wood floors by now without it. Life is so much easier!

Lighting: The lights themselves seem to be working well. They are strong enough to grow stuff I don't want on the bottom of the tank:) Time will tell on the rest.

Aquacontroller: This has been a great investment. I've had problems with some other timers so far, but the AC Jr. has performed flawlessly. I still have some more programming to do for summer related issues, but so far, so good.

What needs improvement:

Plumbing: Two issues here.
-First the plumbing for the closed loop: It works really well, but interferes with the lightrack. I am still trying to decide whether to modify the plumbing or the lights. So far it has made simple tank maintenance more of a headache than I wanted. The lightrack hits the plumbing for the 4-way and I have to contort myself to fit underneath it. Let me tell you that you only touch your back to MH lighting once! I still have over 14" of space to raise the lights, if only they would clear the plumbing.
-Second is the length of plumbing into the wetroom. It works really well, but the control of microbubbles is a pain. I either need to make a longer, more efficient sump or add some type of bubble defuser for the tank return in the sump. Currently there is just too much flow going through the sump, about 4500gph. And microbubbles are whisked through the sump like no tomorrow. There is also excess noise generated by the plumbing into two rooms of the house. I anticipate that when I re-plumb with spaflex, this should subside.

Lightrack: As mentioned above, it hits the plumbing, just enough that I can't raise it as high was it is designed. Unfortunately any modification to the plumbing or lightrack will have to wait a couple months. At anyrate this is the main problem so far as maintenance is put off until it is absolutely necessary.

Cooling: Although not an issue yet, I am concerned over heat this next summer. The tank is easily kept at 79 degrees right now with temps dipping into the 30s at night and 70s during the day. I'm looking into temp control for the wetroom this summer, which should lick the problem. With all the pumps and lights going in the wetroom, it stays between 70-74, with no supplemental heating right now. I have noted that keeping the wetroom temperate via an exhaust fan, I can regulate the tank temp via flow control. The heater has yet to turn on.

Skimmer: Great skimmer, there's just an idiot controlling it. I'll get this darn thing figured out for optimal performance one of these days! I'm really good at making dry, black sludge and taking salt water out of the tank, adjusting for a good wet skim, is currently beyond my knob turning ability:)

Quarantine tank: Good idea, stupid to put it above the sump. I'm always in a panic when doing waterchanges and stuff that I'm going to get some of the water from the q-tank into the sump. At week five of the process, it's not a big deal, but at week one I was concerned that I would be introducing some nasties into the water column.

So far that has all that really stands out over the other, smaller tanks I have maintained. Any comments or suggestions at this point would be a real relief to hear!

Thanks again to everyone that has helped along the way!

Well, you could always tell them it is her tank, and because she's so small yet, it's the only way she can clean it. :D Honestly, I'd LMAO if some one had there kid swimming or underwater in there system. Such as yours, 450g, I know of others in RC having 900g+ so my guess is someone had to at least try it.

Yeh, I had to have my cell phone replaced, I missed the delivery that day and went to the FedEx station to go pick it up. They didn't have power so it took them about 45mins to find it with flashlights. It actually impressed me that they put forth the effort rather than saying we can't do it and being lazy.

Hop, you don't need that much flow through the sump. On my system I'm planning a modest 1250gph.

Quarantine tanks - get it out of the tankroom. Have designated buckets, siphon pumps, nets, sponges and scrapers. I go crazy because my 2 are in the same room. So easy to transfer Ich. This is something I'm looking forward to in the new house.

I've tried on throttling the flow back, but it has not worked. I get the same problem whether I have the valves completely open with full flow or down to half (including the 1000gph from the skimmer). I just went out and throttled things back again, we'll see what happens:)

Q-tank... I know now. After I move the twinkies in I may do just that, but I'm running out of room in the house:) Feel as though I'm getting fat and not using the gym membership, so I have to make room for the get slim equipment:) Getting old blows:)

good advice nexdog, but with a tank room I am consolidating equipment. dedicated buckets, crapers etc. is very smart though, and I will do that!

HOP: We are putting an eliptical facing the tank...

Well I let the system go all day with approx 1/2 flow through the sump... Still have the same issue:( Oh well Wilie Coyote and I are heading back to the drawing board and will redesign the whole thing with ACME parts utilizing a bike for flow and a set of batwings for baffles.

Well I stand corrected and quite please to have just received an e-mail saying that I should be home tomorrow to receive and acclimate my keyscritters!

HOP: Can you post a pic of how the water enters the sump? I'd like to see what's going on and help if I can.--J

Yeah i'll try to get a new, better one. Making dinner and watching the game right now, helping with homework, so it may be later tonight:)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to build one of those melev bubble towers for now and get some more rubble to break up the flow through the sump:) But I'll try to get a good pic up tonight!

I know what ya mean about microbubbles they are definitly a PITA!!!!! I have only about 700gph or so going thru my sump for my 125. I even have the overflow going thru a 100micron filter sock. I STILL get tons of microbubbles!
