Addiction wins, 450 gallon system begins

You guys are just trying to push this thread to page 40 so it will split.

Hop, go buy some corals already. :)

yeah my GSP do the same thing...hard to understand why but it seemed to have started when I introduced other soft corals so it may just be that ricordia or other polyps with powerful toxins are irritating the GSP.

Skimmer looks great, if a little too clean. :D I should probably be cleaning mine more! I am thinking about installing a wet neck wash down system...yes, laziness is the mother of invention. Sump is too clean BTW. Who do you think you are, melev???
In helping the thread split, I just wanted to tell jnarowe that I cleaned the skimmer and sump again tonight:)

So what's been going on with your tank? Do you have an abridged version? Last I left off reading this thread (it's been a while), I believe you were toying with the idea of taking the tank down??? I think it was your thread anyway.

Glad to see it's still up and running. :)

I guess I'll post something news worthy in the tank's system progression.

I started hitting about 81.9 on the tank and it's still early in the year. So I placed a single 4" fan over the sump. The first day I really didn't notice a difference and forgot about it. Two days later I checked and the temp was 76.1 and the heater was on... Oops. So anyway, I got it tied in now and the tank is staying extremely constant. May not have to add the AC to the wetroom after all:)

We'll see though, the hottest day so far has been 91, so I'll see what happens when the triple digits hit later this year!

Yeah, I had some buyers regret and some business issues. But decided to keep it and for now, I'm trying to keep it simple. Maybe in a year or so, we'll start adding SPS and more toys... Might even be building a home later if we find some land we like. Then this will be the small nano tank:)

So far my fan cooling system has worked quite well too. I have been very pleased with its ability to keep the tank at appropriate temps. Doesn't get to triple digits here and I have my room intake under my deck, so I feel fairly confident, especially since we just had a stretch of days that got into the 90's.

Hop, what did you do to "tie in" the temperature, did you connect your fan to a temp controller?

Dudester: Yup... I already had my two 4" canopy fans tied into the AC Jr. So I just tied it into them. the 2 fans for the inside are 4" computer fans from radio shack, but the one over the sump is a 4" condenser fan from a refrigerator.

11fishes: Thanks, It's been fun so far. But I can tell you that there are many, many tanks here that are much, much nicer. I used them as motivation for this tank while I learn the ropes:)

Well I decided to do some experimenting this weekend and officially didn't do squat in the end:rolleyes:

I built a platform to hold my skimmer about a foot lower, at the height of the fuge. Then I tried to add my second beckett to the skimmer and raised the becketts. Went to the hardware store and got all the plumbing that I needed. Spent a few hours getting everything plumbed in and.... A dud. The PCX-55 just didn't have the umph to run it. So I took one of the becketts off until I can get a bigger pump.

Then I was having trouble getting consistent foam and after doing some not-so-scientific research and a few post in the MRC forum, I decided to plumb a line outside for the air intake. This was done to get away from the humidity of the wetroom. Well this worked very well! BUT, my pump died when I went to fire it back up. Took it apart and cleaned the whole thing out. Had some issues with the front bushing so I cleaning it out and put a small amount of safe lube on it. Now seven hours later, I'm just starting to get a foam head going due to the small amount of lube introduced.

So the moral of the story is:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it

LOL. Yeah, but look how much money I saved!

Since I had to spend all my time going back and fixing everything the way it was, I didn't have time to go to the LFS. So now all I have to do is pick up a new pump:D

Probably flawed logic... Now I'm trying to decide between a Gen-X or a Pan World Pump... I'm thinking Pan World as they draw lass watts, but a hair less GPH.

Ok, finally the skimmer is working properly. Hope I don't have to do that again. Still researching whether moving the air intake outside was beneficial. I should know by the end of the day, depending on if I have to adjust the needle valve in accordance with the humidity:)

Well I finally made it down to the new LFS:)

It wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was pretty good. They even took me for a walk through of their various systems. Picked up some frozen food and some kalk mix. Tomorrow I'm thinking abut making my own Kalk set up..

Oh yeah, and I happened to pick up a nice acro frag and a fist sized rock covered in orange and green zoos:) I'm acclimating them right now:)

So I got my two new frags acclimated last night and left them in the sump. Quick question thought, this being my first SPS frag.

Should I put it on the bottom of the display and over the next few weeks move it up to the final mounting place?

Or should I mount it in it's final place and cut back on the lighting for the first few weeks?

I'm thinking mount it and cut back on the lighting, I try to keep my hands out of the tank as much as possible...
