Adding 2nd Watanabei Angel Female

I couldn't bring myself to pay for a male. I did get three females, and they are definitely doing some submissive behaviors. One of the ladies seems to have muddier colors, so I will keep you guys posted if I get some gender swapping going on.

Curious how this will turn out. Please keep us posted.

Did one ever turn male out of the three?

What would happen in you added a mixed male/female pair with an existing large female?

It could go either way. For something this pricy and delicate, you are probably better off by selling the existing one before getting the pair.

I currently just purchased two that are in QT, I think the LFS had another so I may go get it. I like the three female plan.

They are pretty hardy, not delicate at all. Eat everything flakes and frozen quickly.

Out of the blue, my female jumped out after several years. She is fat like a torpedo. Spawned every few days too. I had the LFS ordered a female for me. On arrival she was thin and pinched stomach and head, but after 1 weeks, she put on a lot of weight and roam the tank like the other one.

My Genicanthus will accept another female, but it takes a few days. Lots of food prior to the introduction keeps the established fish a bit less aggressive. The new fish get QT'd and fat to prepare for the aggression. I don't intervene since that seems to just make them more mad.

Once in the tank and getting along, they can turn into males and it is OK. I had a second Watanabei turn into a male once. I just recently had a bellus turn into a male with my Watanabei pair.

Just added two females to my 220g tank a few days ago. Hoping that they will pair up. Ordered one small and one medium through my LFS.

Beautiful pair that went yesterday on divers den for $399.99

NO, peaceful here all day long.
Took a little chasing with the 1st addition, but it was almost a year later.
3rd one , just a glance.

The fish has a swim bladder issue, sometimes caused by improper decompression. This symptom is unfortunately common in many Genicanthus. Your fish is in pretty rough shape right now, and certainly will not be able to compete in your display aquarium. It should be placed into an acclimation box (with hiding places), or better yet an established QT tank and allowed to destress on it's own accord. Make sure to feed small amounts very frequently if still accepting food.

If a retailer is properly conditioning fish this sort of issue would arise prior to being offered to hobbyists. This obviously directly impacts cost of fish as retailers have to hold onto it longer which comes with labor, saltwater and food costs. Unless you have an awesome LFS that properly conditions I advise only purchasing them from reputable vendors who do their due diligence for every fish. My closest LFS rarely brings these in, unless upon request, and pushes them out within days... as you can imagine sourcing Genicanthus for most people from places like this is a lose-lose.
