Adding animals

I've been waiting three years to get another chocolate since I lost my last one to tumours behind both eyes. Was then waiting to have more than just mud for a yard and planned to buy a male puppy in the Spring. But, Mom intervened. The local rescue by their house has a female about 2 1/2 years old my Mom can't stop visiting, and now she will be joining our family (zoo). Because I have to go to Memphis, my parents will be picking her up on Monday and keeping her until they bring her out after I'm back next Saturday. The dog is "Lilly" lower right http://www.dogsrule2.com/

Congrads. Labs are cool dogs, we adopted our 10 year old black lab 8 years ago. Took him out pheasent hunting for the first time last year. Don't know who got more excited when he jumped his first bird, him or me (I know it wasn't my buddy with the $400 springer).

She looks real nice. Not sure why they listed her as older cuz I would'nt call 2 1/2 old lol.
I'm always happy to see people get shelter animals. My couch eating dog came from the shelter but that's a diff. story lol.

LOL Yeah, the tongue sticking out had my Mom confused. Them calling her "older" had ME confused. I didn't even call for more info. My parents ended up going in to see her and then found out they were just trying to say she wasn't a puppy and didn't choose a good word :)

Got back from Memphis early this morning, and the new dog will be here with my parents in less than two hours :) They picked her up yesterday and said they have never seen a dog so loving and well behaved. She is also obviously well trained. Hard to believe someone would lose a dog like this and not look for her :(

If she likes water you should try dock dogs with her! :) There's a competition up in green bay again, on the 29th & 30th at Lambeau. They're only charging $10 a wave (2 jumps). Will be fun! :D

Bravo on the adoption.
Those of you who have been to my place have seen our choc-lab/potbelly pig mix Molly. Molly was a reclamation project. We got her when she was 8. She is down to a svelte 95 pounds and hasn't eaten a neighbor kid in weeks. Wouldn't trade her for the world.

How do you train somehting like that?

I have a black lab puppy with more energy than anything in the world. I would LOVE to wear him out regularly.

Maybe then, he wouldnt be so naughty.

any pointers are welcome.

So sorry for hijacking the thread.

You mean the dock dogs? Or not eating a kid?! :D I don't really know, I don't do any training for it, he just does it. He's always loved the water and the first time we threw a toy off of a dock he just lept off to get it, so he's never hesitated. The people that do it a lot train, but I dont' really know what they do. You should try it since you're so close! I've only been to 2 competitions, 1 in GB (at the Pet Expo earlier this year) and 1 in Winneconne in May. At the GB event especially there were a lot of 1st timers like us. You get practice jumps before the competitions start to get them familiar with it. Some dogs jump, a lot of new dogs wouldn't jump. You throw a toy in (anything you want except something that was once alive!) and can coax them as much as you want, anything goes except you are NOT allowed to push them in. The people there try to coax them in too if they don't want to go, by splashing the water, cheering, etc. You have a minute and a half I think, if they don't jump in by then you have to leave the dock. Some dogs that eventually jump just kind of plop in and only get a few feet. Pablo's longest was I think 14'9". Not the shortest, but definitely not the longest! There are dogs jumping 23-25", it's pretty cool to watch!

It's a lot of fun cuz it's really a relaxed atmosphere, no pressure. They all just want the dogs to have fun! I do agility with Pablo too and that's fun, but more competitive and not as relaxed as the dock diving. I don't know if there's an age restriction on the dogs or not, I can't find nything about it but could ask if you are interested. If you want any more info PM me so we don't take over this thread. :)

kiowascout--how old is your puppy? I don't know why I couldn't find it before, but I just saw in the rules that they have to be at least 6 months old to participate.
