Adding Montis Between Acros

I was thinking about adding some encrusting montis to a few bare spots between my "stick". Good...bad idea. Will there be fighting one the encrusting reach the bases of the acros?

Anybody done this? Experiencs?

Thanks in advance.

i put my montis on a smaller piece of rock that is then placed in between. You can then take the rock/colony out to frag.

Not a bad idea.

Was kinda wanting them to encrust the current rock and fill it in with color.

Anyone else?

I've seen pictures of monti overgrowing the base of acropora and starting to encrust up it. So at least in that case, the monti won the battle when the two came in contact. Could be bad if the monti grows faster than the acro! I def wouldn't try it with your most prized acro or monti.

Bad idea with both Cap and Digitata in opposite directions. The Acro will burn and possibly kill the Cap(had this happen). The Digitata will destroy the Acro and grow all over its base(had this happen).

+1 dont do it. I just take rocks and place them inbetween. When it gets fully encrusted frag it and start again :D

Put your montis down low and let them grow up and into your stuff. I sit corals on top of and inside of Montis all the time. Usually the montis just grow up and around the acros. The acros almost always win. If you are sucessful in this hobby your corals will grow into as much space as you give them. Close, far doesnt matter. If you corals arent growing into each other in a couple of years or so then you are doing something wrong.

The only encrusting monti that I've ever had that won against any acro is my Undata.
I actually did put a lot of encrusting montis between my acros years ago and pretty much all of them have been shaded out from the acros growing over them.
:)

Acros usually beat montis any day.. They will devour and kill the monti before the monti has a chance to defend back.

IME from the past, my acros will puke its guts and sting montis. Montis then die, and regrow fast back.

Here are some images of montis touching acros that i took a minute ago. Usually the montis just grow up and around.

Some are more aggressive.

Sometimes the acros are more aggressive and kill the montis where they touch.

Not a real big problem in the long run.

My intent is to eventually show no bare rock so corals touching is going to happen.

Dogboy, im always amazed by your tank! It takes any wind ive ever had in my reefing sails out...Its like being Tim Tebow at dinner with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers.

LOL Thanks Man, thats pretty high praise indeed. Not trying to showoff so much as I feel the need to spread the word that its ok if your corals touch each other. SPs especially usually dont cause too much damage. LPS on the other hand can be very deadly so never try that.

My monti is stinging my acro. Is growing up the base and killing acro as it goes.

I'm doing it, it's a small hassle. Caps get nuked if I don't trim them back in time. I don't mind trimming them back now and then to make new frags. Just use a razor blade and typically the encrusting monti will pop right off if you press down on it and cut straight line. I think it's the worth effort. I like how it looks.
