Adding more sand to an existing tank..

2-3 year old tank. Very minimal sand bed, due to removing cyano from the sandbed repeatedly every day for months upon months.

Time to get more and fill in. I'll probably need a few bags.

How should I add, to avoid a bloom of any sort? This is how I got the last cyano bloom - I added half a bag to the system, that was rinsed. End result was cyano for 6 months. Can't afford that to happen again.

Note, having a nutrient issue right now too. Should I wait until its under control?

can you give us more insight into what size/parameters to your tank? Also, what type of nutrient issue are you having?

Also, what livestock in tank?

Sorry for all the questions, but one cannot really give good advice without having the proper information first. Thanks in advance.

Rinse it well and add only a little at a time. It should take a few days to get the whole bag in.

125G tank, 40G sump, ASM G3. Parameters pending, I need new test kits which aren't coming in until next week. Last check, NO3 was between 20-40ppm and PO4 was (I believe) 0.25.

Doing weekly water changes, also.

Soak the new sand in RODI water for a few days. Dump the water and change it each day using a 5 gallon bucket. After that, use a funnel with the end cut off and a long 1 1/2" PVC pipe. Add sand into little piles and gently flatten it out. Don't need to do it all at once. Give the sand some time to settle.
