Adding salt by weight

I add salt using a plastic cup and I always have to add more. I assume I am using an 8 ounce cup and a proper cup is 12 ounces or something like that. I think it will just be easier to do it by weight and dump everything in at once then a cup at a time.

Here is my question! how many grams of salt do I need to make 10 gallons of water?

I'd say find out what one cup weighs by weighing it,then multipling that number by how much water you want to mix

You don't want to dump it all in at once.

As for the weight it will vary. It will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 35g per liter, but it will usually take a little more. Many of the salts in the salt mix are hygroscopic, so they absorb water. The weight of that water doesn't count, and you never know just exactly how much is going to be there.

I weigh out 1.5 pounds of Instant Ocean for every 5 gallons. This usually mixes up right around 1.026.

I mix 15 gallons in a 20 gallon Brute. I find it easier to mix a little higher than 1.026 and then add water to hit the mark since it dilutes easily.

I use Tropic Marin and 170 grams per gallon gives me 1.026

You will still want to add the salt slowly to the mixing bucket. Adding large amounts of salt at one time increases the risk of precipitation. This can result in lower values of Alk/Cal/Mag and a crusty buildup in your mixing bucket and on your pumps. Heating the water after the salt is added will also help prevent this.

What does "slowly" mean? Over a few minutes?

I put in salt for my 5g bucket in over about 60 seconds. Pour some in, stir, more, stir again, etc. Just try to prevent a huge "dump"- if youre mixing in a bucket youre not going to hurt anything by dumping, it can just make the process of mixing more difficult for you.
