Adding Sand to an Established Tank

About a year ago I had a horrible green Cyanobacteria outbreak in my tank and I made the mistake of sucking some sand out during that time. I would really like to add some sand back into the tank. I realize this should be done slowly and not all at once, correct? Any info would be helpful.

I've had better results adding like 1 to 2 solo cups per week and mixing it in. I do stir the sand bed regularly so mixing it in didn't sir up too much detritus.

I added 20 lbs of white caribisea live sand to my established 40 breeder about a month ago with no issues, didn't cycle, no outbreaks just nice white sand. It was cloudy for a day, I put a new sock in the sump & it cleared completely. Just my experience.
