I have a 180 gallon dt currently with a 7-8 inc tail to tail vlamingi.. a 4 inch purple tang.. a 4 inch yellow tang and am wanting to add a sohal tang to the equasion and gauging opinions on would he be too agressive or be able to be happy with the other 3 tangs? Also people who have them are they like powder blues where they are real finicky or just moderately hardy like most other tangs?

Your tank is not large enough for a vlamingi. A sohal will be way to aggressive for the mix and your tank is WAY too small for either of these two fishes.

I agree, a 180 is a bit small for those two large tangs and sohals can get so aggressive it would get ugly.

Ok there goes that idea I guess. Everywhere ive read said 180 gallon or better to house vlamingi but I guess thats on the conservative side. He prob will need bigger tank soon? So if I got rid of vlamingi at some point tank isnt big enought to house sohal by itself? I wont keep them together then, but still wondering about how finicky or hardy they are.

A sohal tang gets progressively more aggressive. In the early months, no problem, as it gets larger and meaner, big problems. I had to remove one from a 350 gallon tank. Pretty fish, but MEAN.

My vlamingi in my 450 went from about 3 inches to a foot in a just a year. Shoals are awesome, but you create a chance he might kill fish.

Actually, Vlamingi tangs are one of my favorite fish. But I suspect you need a LARGE tank for one, not a 450 gallon. Sohals are gorgeous but they will get very ornery.

I have had a pair of vlamingii tangs for over 4 years now. They grew EXTREMELY fast till they hit a foot long and it has been very slow for the last 2-3 years. They are both at around 14-15" now in an 11 foot tank. I've had a sohal for going on 3 years and is a good citizen. He is a solid 10" now and has been growing steadily. I also have a 9" clown tang with them all in harmony.

While that tank is 10'10" long...isn't it also 2'x2'? You don't have any issues with 2 15" fish in a tank with 24" turnaround space?
