my sunlit algae scrubber
my sunlit algae scrubber
When I started this system I had plans for big scrubber, well more than a year later I finally got the ball rolling. This is my 3rd and biggest scrubber build and the most easiest as is does not involve any electrical wiring other than the pump feeding the scrubber (even that may change).
The basic design is a 6mm sheet of glass 120cm wide with a drop of 110cm, set at a ramp angle of about 45 degrees. Water is fed via an Aquamedic OR3500 return pump that sits in the nursery tank. I will change this later to rather use the return flow that feeds the nursery tank, to also feed the scrubber. That way when I have power loss, there is still flow going to my scrubber as the one return pump that feeds the nursery and the main DT, all runs off battery back up.
I used a dremmel to slice some slits along the spray bar.
One thing I will change as well it to place have the feed come from the centre of the spray bar via a T piece, as you can see the flow that enters from the left "ignores" the first couple of slits, hence the gap on the left. All in all though the width of the waterfall at the bottom is 90cm wide...more than enough to still do the job.
Had to do some work on the splash back/spray at the bottom end by coverything the underneath with plastic, all in all got some nice aeration going. On the opposite side of the scrubber against the wall (not in the pics)....I have a fan mounted, this blows directly on the acrubber as well, so hopefully in hot summers will also help a bit in keeping things cool.
The scrubber should take about 3-4 months to really kick in...will show then all the good stuff its able to purge from the system.
