Adee's new build

Could you talk a bit more about the "dead coral hidden from view"? Was it all underneath, or in the middle of each coral, etc.? Can you see some sort of thinning process as being beneficial?

Thx,

Dave.M

Over time I've had a slow down on flow....especially the corals in the middle of the tank. This led to detritus collecting there, coupled with my blue sponge epidemic, I have smothering of the sps bases. Also (totally my fault) I've had a couple of oopsies where I allowed my alk to drop low to 5.4 dKH also cause some bleaching at the bases. What I think happens is because of the low flow areas, its these bases that are easily succumbed to STN over time. Not all the corals though but my big green stags, blue stags and ice caps of late. its not so much trimming the corals from the ends but rather weeding them out the much the same a farmer would do crops where the seeds are planted way too close. they just need more space. Hence I've opted to have fewer corals though allowing to grow as big or even bigger than before. hopefully with no issues of STN going forward. I think thinning is beneficial, you may face an implosion of coral losses later (a trait of old tank syndrome).

Would it be possible for you to get into the inner parts of the branching corals to do some pruning? That would allow overall growth while providing more internal space for flow.

in some places yes...other areas will not be able to. Can prune from the outside, but in most cases u want to get into the central areas.
I have blue sponge that's overgrown all my rock work and is choking the bases of every coral which is another area of culling.

One of the best tanks through all my years of lurking. It's nice to see a few well taken care of corals rather than stocking the tank with everything you can afford to show off.

Well done!

I noticed on page 9 there was a pocillopora looking coral that was bleaching...

Was this something you just introduced? I'm interested to know what happened as it seems you have a fool proof system running.

still a favorite tank. very impressive. can't wait to see the next round.

what is the difference between the old and soon to be new LEDs?

Stylophora.....that how it looks under strong lighting and low nutrient parameter....about twice the size now that this pic.

Thanks Reefski. The new LED's are the Orphek Atlantik's. Packs a high PAR/PUR IMO....also being 600mm long....will give a wider spread, though will only need that once the SPS overgrow the tank again.

you should def throw some pics up of prunning the corals. some frag pics, colonies like the one you posted earlier, just to show all the work that goes into rebooting a system...

Any update on this tank? This is honestly one of the most impressive setups out there and your coral growth is simply amazing.

Heya guys...tank still in state of flux....I've removed all the live rock form the display, some of the "chunks' of corals laying on the floor on some egg crate....so tank not looking appealing at the mo. I'm slowly selling off the colonies. Tank is only running off sunlight at the mo. Once I've cleared out more space I'll begin with the new scaping. I really need to think this one through. I have some hand selected SPS specimens that I've been nursing for about a year now in my grow out tank, so quiet keen to inject some fresh and amazing colours back into the system and let the growing start all over again. I sell off most of the corals to fellow reefers, I started mostly that way myself, buying frags from other reefers. Hope to have something descent to post in a couple of months, been painstakingly slow, time also has not been on my side lately...winter is approaching our side of the world as well, so the tank will keep me indoors a lot.

reboot update

I've taken all the live rock out from the display, also started siphoning out and removing the gravel. Intend to go bare bottom for a while in an effort to keep the tank surgically clean. Will add new gravel again around October, hopefully by then I've replanted some of my prized frags I've been nursing in my frag tank for some time now. The display is currently running totally on sunlight again, just need to sell off some of the colonies that are too big for the frag tank before i can finish the rescape.

Some pics in terms what things look like, still got a long way to go. Also a "dry run" of the rock work, I've decided with even less rock work...the little peaks stand no more than 27cm in height....so still got another 30cm to go before i have coral tips growing out the water again.

I've come to realise that scaping is not about the rockwork but rather the intended direction that your corals will end up growing. So the big picture (so to speak), will only start to show some two years from now, again my intention is not to see any rockwork.

I still like the dense forest look so lots of branching stags will be the order of the day with a few tabling types on the out skirts. The new Orphek Atlantiks that I still need to mount, will also cover the full 1m width of the tank so every inch of the tank will receive more than adequate lighting to make those colors pop.

The tank will have a lot more yellows and pinks, two colours IMO that show best when your husbandry is in tip top shape. So quite keen to see the tank take shape again. I'm in no hurry though, so taking things a weekend at a time.
