Hi, i have some questions, what do you think is more efficient for you? Dbs, chaeto or ats? Do you think the three are necessary?
How is your dsb doing? What maintenance will you perform on them?
About water temp, How is the behaoviur without the chiller? The ats can support and maintain the temp?
I have the intention to follow up your setup but to implement 2 frag tanks as your nursery, but I am worry about the temp on water and lighting.

The colors on your corals are better with just the sunlight or the supplementation you have is necessary?

Sorry if they are alot of questions, I just want to get your experience on this beautiful setup.

You forgot also the half a ton of LR in my cryptic zone below my frag tank.
There is no real way of calculating which is better without going down to some serious CSI type lab examination. My approach is simple, if there is space for it...then add it on. My filtration being biological has very little side effects as it can only "grow" based on the amount of nutrients in the system. I only perform maintainable on the ATS and chaeto. The DSB I will siphon a wee bit of the top layer, rinse the sand that got taken out and put back. The ATS does help with the cooling, by at least 2 degrees. Try and build your main sump to be in a cooler place, like an underground area....then acts as a heatsink.
It's only been about 3 weeks now with the added led and already I can see a change. The thing is with sunlight, does not shine the colors of your T5's or Led, that's why sps will always suddenly look better. Think of taking a normal flashlight and hold some blue plastic over the lens. Will shine blue on a white wall, it's that what the human eye will see. The trick with artificial light is more important that u get the right spectrum for coral growth, color for the human eye is by far a secondary need.
 
wow,love the thought of just using natural sunlight to power your tank, awesome tank with the LEDs. I agree being the TOTM, very cool stuff, something to aspire for if I move to a warmer place to cut on electric bills. I cannot believe the growth on your sps,it is amazing.

Wow is right! As if it wasn't spectacular enough with just natural sunlight, now you have the best of both worlds. I love both looks. Those are some massive colonies you have, they look so natural. The night shots are awesome too! Beautiful colors, I just can't say enough.

Thanks, yes lighting now adds another dimension that I"ve been missing out on.

So, I can say the sunlight is doing the job for everything and the led is just to enjoy the tank during the night? or I am lost ?? :headwalls:
 
Incredible! Your tank is so clean and healthy it is unbelievable.

You do realize how much money those colonies could make you? :D

How big were they were you originally bought them?

Thanks...yes I do realise....the replacement cost will be enormous...they are my precious's.

Most of these I got as frags some 4 years back, some no bigger than my pinky. Just take it one polyp at a time.

This one has really coloured up nicely, doing better than under the 400w BLV halide I had on, during last years winter.

Hi Adriaan! congratulations for your system, very functional and beautiful! I have followed your thread!

I´m fanatic of reeftanks with sunlight so...
, in your system I like more the way the sunlight shines, the color and growth of some sps, and of course the intense color of fish!

IMO the corals with sunlighting are not so colorful like reeftanks with zeovit and artificial lighting but I think that must be due to other things...because I have seen some colonies extremely colorful with sunlight in reeftanks and in the reef too, but not all the colonies in the same system or place. I have to admit that artificial light looks beautiful but it´s not the real color, just my opinion...

I have had my own system for "researching" sunlight with tridacna and, it has worked. my 2 maximas had grown well in 1 year and a half. the green one had the best color (it was more metallic) in winter.

Why do you suplement light in winter?? for better colors?
you are in the same latitude than Okinawa and Red Sea North.
 
Your tank is nicer than the aquarium in New Orleans where i live.just wow.I just spent the last hour reading this thread from beginning to end.Incredible.
