Adjusting lights. Need advice

So I just switched over to (2) 250w Radiums from a 6 bulb (80w each) T5 retro kit. My T5 bulbs were on 12 hours dawn/dusk, and 9 hours full lighting. This was in a hanging canopy about 6" off the water.

I built a new canopy for the halides but wasn't able to raise it due to the way it was hung so the bottom of the reflectors (lumenmax elite) were about 6" off the water for the last 5 days. I have noticed a little bleaching on one coral and some very slight browning on some others. From the start of the halides, I reduced my lighting down to 5.5 hours. I rebuilt the brackets for the canopy last night and raised it up to 12" above the water. Do you think that is ok? Going to 12" above the water line? too high/low?

I should add that my tank is 6' with two rock formations so I have been using just (2) 250w bulbs but have already ordered a 3rd to get proper spread. I was hoping I could avoid the spotlight effect with two rock formations but that isn't working.

Also, i posted a similar thread in the equipment/lighting forum without much response. My tank is primarily SPS so I thought I would ask here.
