Advertising

My first question is, why not advertising. I can think of many reasons why we should accept it, but none why not. By accepting donations and publicly announcing/thanking the donator, we are already accepting advertising. Really. Think about it.

That aside, we have a group of people that share the same interest. We have no membership dues. And we accept donations in trade for publicity. With some advertising we can lighten the load on our rafflers and give those members with less income an equal opportunity to win.

Dude, can't we give this stuff a rest for just a little while? How about we get the first newsletter off the ground WITHOUT advertising and revisit it later.

As a few have mentioned before, it would be good to come up with a club policy covering our intentions and rules for dealing with vendors. I think this should be done before we even consider advertising.

Your ambition is great, but I think you're exhausting some, if not most of us by suggesting so much change all at once.

I think it all boils down to the question of why people join this club. Personally I'm into aquaria and terraria, and I like to hang out and talk with likeminded people, either at meetings or online.

I like the club to operate with an absolute minimum of bureaucracy because I consider that stuff to be to much like "work" and having nothing to do with my real interest. So personally, I see no real reason for the revenues generated by advertising, and in fact I don't really see why we need any revenues at all.

I realize I'm somewhat to one side of the spectrum with my views, and other people like to have a different sort of involvement with their interests. So if they want a more complex arrangement that's fine, but don't expect me to sit there and listen to a retelling of last months minutes. :D

Regarding advertising specifically, I think it creates a particular kind of relationship with retailers that could constrain the freedom of our members. I like that we don't talk bad about the LFS' because we are nice people, not because we are beholden to them. OTOH, I could really be overthinking this, and advertising is really no big deal. I guess I consider it an unecessary hassle.

Agree with Vin (...and Dan too :D )....and as I said previously...

I think advertisements are premature, if we're even interested in going that route, and that we need to come up with the vendor policy we've been discussing before we get into anything like this. In addition, I have a feeling most of the club would rather that the last page be a continuation of content rather than advertisements.[/I] .

I personaally feel that the Back Page Ad idea adds another "commercial aspect" to out club that I for one don't think we need. I do think that we as a club can have fun with an online newletter. So we should proceed with the idea as far as im concerned.[/I] .

We certainly don't want to assocate our beloved hobby with business advertisements as much possible. I see an occasional exception here under unique circumstances to be justified later. But I am hoping this will be much later if ever.[/I] .

Why is it so hard to understand where we are coming from??

OK, I'll back off.

My zeal stems from being excited about the newsletter only to have it 'tweaked' into something very different than I originally envisioned. I'm no longer excited about it. I've been trying to hang on to some aspect of what excited me in the first place.

I think the majority of the "tweaking" is preventing the newsletter from being an immediate springboard into fund raising and vendor relations. If that is the basis of your motivation, I think it would be best to leave the newsletter to someone else. Otherwise, which I hope to be the case, I agree with Dan that there is no harm in letting you be creative.

Diddo with Vin, Tony, Joe

Chris, I believe you mentioned the most important portion of the puzzle: "...than I originally envisioned". If you have an idea which you would like to turn over to a club, then you would have to be accepting of the fact that it may be tweaked, since in fact, it is a club.
