Advice on breeding Bangaiis

I have a mated pair of Bangaii Cardinalfish. They have been successful in raising babies to the point that they are no longer being brooded in the male's mouth. (I don't know if this is the proper terminology.) They are currently in a mixed reef tank. I think I'm going to need to put the fish in a different tank to be able to feed the babies what they need to survive. I have another tank- 37Gal. with a pair of tomato clowns that I plan to get rid of and 3 anemones that I plan to keep. If I put my Bangaiis in the smaller tank with the anemones will the anemones eat the babies or will the babies be able to avoid them?

I'm not 100% sure if they would avoid them or not. I know that the babies generally hide in the spines of urchins. If you can put a couple long spine urchins in there, it may help. The better option would be to plumb in a 10 gallon tank or so. You wouldn't have to worry about them being eaten, and you can feed them more because it is hooked up to a larger tank.

Are you in the Rochester area?

I ' d think hard about your motivation behind breeding. I moved my breeding clowns and bangaii into separate breeding systems. Neither has produced since leaving my reef. As a business, it has a dismal probability of success. If you approach the project as hobby, it can be enjoyable. Also realize the real possibility that breeding stock may die in the process

I live in Florida. I'm thinking of doing this more as a hobby than as a business. If I end up making enough money to pay for it I'd be satisfied. I DON'T want to stress out my Bangaiis which is why I don't want to try to move them any more than necessary.

Leave them in your main tank and move the babies. Or learn how to strip the male and then incubate the eggs artificially.

these Cardinalfish hide among anemones like they do urchins. The anemones won't eat the baby Bangaii- the Tomato Clownfish WILL.

I lost my male before being able to move them. Lost a few more trying to find a replacement male. Remember the males don't eat while holding. My 28 cube hated being feed heavily. Qt tanks, grow out system, bbs, adds up quick. Breaking even is a long way off for me.

I think I'll try it as I planned with losing the tomato clowns and putting the bangaiis in with the anemones. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Well my tomatoes are gone. The female was easy to catch. I just took a tiny barbless hook and made a minature fishing pole with a bit of shrimp on it. Bam! caught her right away. I had the net ready so she was only hooked for a very short period of time and suffered no damage. The male was a lot harder but finally netted him with a lot of patience and luck.
