I need some advice on a metal halide. I found this guy selling some metal halide shop lights and was wondering if you guys would be kind enough to tell me wether or not they could be used for aquariums and or the good and bad sides of this. I know these are generally expensive but he's selling these soo cheap that I want to get one. My boyfriend thinks it wont work. Also what is your opinion on metal halide bulbs where to get them and what to look for? Thanks

They will work, but you will have to get a different bulb. They look to be M59 style but could be M135. Here is a thread that will help explain the types of ballasts. Basically the M59 and M135 will determine what bulbs you can run. I wouldn't use the housing the light comes in but the reflector looks ok. This would be a pretty good retro kit if you have a hood and some DIY skills.

oh yeah I know it's the wrong set up for an aquarium the way it is right now. We have a 36" Nova Extreme T5 on our 46 gallon aquarium. I was just trying to see what the possibility would be to use this light for a separate frag grow out tank. Now I just have to find out if they are M59 or M135. What bulbs could run on either one of those? (sorry very new to the Halide thing but know I want them... know where I can read a DUMMIES GUIDE TO HALIDES?) I appreciate everyones point of view on this so everyone please let me know what you think of everything! : )
