Advice on tank set up

This is #1 reason I use a DSB, I am lazy :) Especially since I have to drag the kitchen chair over to reach the bottom of the tank.

"Siphoning, disturbing or cleaning of the sediments will result in significant removal or mortality of sediment organisms and may severely damage the functional aspect of the sand bed."

I ordered my tank today from glass cages and I had to go with a 24" tall tank. To go to a 31 tall was an extra $305! The glass has to be thicker is why. I had it drilled for a OM 4 way but split each return 2x so it has 8 ports. I talked to Paul at OM today and he suggested this for what I plan on doing with the tank. Yes my tank will look like swiss cheese but its the way I want it for the way I am running the CL.

Congrats Angela!!! That tank will look soooo awsome on your stand. I can't wait to see it! How long did glasscages quote you on build time? How many sides did you finally decide on with the low iron glass? Are you going to have them do your sump also? The nice thing about only 24 tall is your lighting. You won't have togo to 400watts and then battle heat issues.

oh and I guess the extra holes in the back will solve your canopy issue with doing your returns over the top of the tank :)

Actually I was talked out of low E by the lady on the phone (Toms wife I think). She said in her opinion its a waste of $200 extra dollars ($100 front $50 each side) unless you are a profesional photographer and need super clear glass. She said you would never tell the differance if someone didn't say it was low E. After she added up 9 extra holes and bulkheads I figured I better stop before I got in real trouble.
Yes I am getting a 50 long sump also from them. And about 3 weeks lead time because all the holes.

The 50L seems to be the sump of choice (fishdoc and I have each gotten/will be getting one?). Are you going to build it, or have Tom build it? I got glass and siliconed in the Lexan baffles. Likely not the best set up in the world, but should work for my purposes;).

Just put the baffles in mine today:

The workmansip is a little sloppier than I like but that's pretty much what I expected and I am a perfectionist so take it FWIW.

Thems shore is fancy. Ah, the new table saw... How about some close up of that sloppiness;)? Looks great from here. I left silicone trails twice as wide as the ones on my 50L, so I had no room to complain:D.

I am just gonna have them install the baffels I think. I can't seem to get anything done real fast with the new little one around. I hope there standard design is going to be OK.

7' x 2' x 2' is what I ordered. I couldn't go $305 extra for the 31" tall. I think the 7 extra inches would have made a huge differance in the viewing area but I have to draw the line somewhere.

its just like mine in the basement then minus the cheese holes :). its 200grr. if you need ideas and want to see it your more than welcome to stop by. just has a few damsels and a clown trigger in it right now. soon to have my puffer and some sort of tang and large angel

Congrats on ordering the new tank! I think you will be glad you went with the 4-Way from OM and got advice from Paul on how to set it up. Their customer service is phenomenal.

I had a tank almost the exact size you ordered and it will be pretty impressive. Please post pics to show us how you progress. I love watching new systems come together!

Angela. COngradts on the tank.. sure wish I could go that big... wifey would kill me.. maybe... I had GC make my 20 long sump for me. put in all the baffels with an error though. had to add 1 extra baffle and render another useless. other than that, I LOVE IT. great workmanship.

On the DSB. while properly maintained, I have heard of some success out of them. I TOTALLY understand the laziness factor. I am always having to travel out of town and therefor, the less crap I have to deal with, the better for both me and my wife. I am most likely the most laxidasical reefer here as far as my maintence. My sand bed is about 2 to 3 " deep and honestly, I put too much in. Why would one Siphon their sand? only reason I can tell is to remove detritus or fish poop. with a proper cleanup crew and sand sifting fish like gobies, it should never allot the nasties to build up.

Now, I am in no way shape or form knocking your ways or trying to force mine on you, just giving you a bit of my insight. A different school of thought if you wish. Heck, (plug your ears newbies) I dont even change my water. well.. I did have to when I moved, but havent since (2 months) and before that I cannot remember the last time I did.

Well, I did it. Called back and changed to the 31" tall. I spent a lot of time looking at pics last night and just love the look of the boxier tanks, like mdwannabes. So I guess its bean and rice for the next month  I already have so much invested in this tank I hate to not get what I want in something so important as the actual tank. Bigger skimmers and trinkets like top offs can wait till later dates. I am so excited now. I was happy to get it going before but now I can't wait to get it!! Without overflows it measures 270 gallons. Anyone want to volunteer a truck and a sore back in a few weeks? I would guess it will be HEAVY. Glad its on a slab!

BTW, my experience with GC's has been great so far with lots of phone tag. Beth has been more than helpful.

Hi Angela, Congrats on the new tank. You will have a blast with it. I am coming to see Wayne in Aug and if you are up and running I will bring a few extra frags for you. Take a peek of what I'll be pulling from.

Angela I can get a truck and would be willing to help. If you think a big box truck (like a small u-haul) would be better I have access to one of those also. Just let me know when. You pay for gas of course ;)
