after a couple of years with no fish tanks in the house i baught a brand new tank and am sarting from scratch. i baught a 54gal cube reef ready. last night was start night. so far all is well. my question is that in the baffold (where the tank drains refills) there is a piece of clear tubeing that comes from the drain pvc tubeing. its makeing this annoying sucking noise, any ideas how to quiet it down? i may just be having a brain fart but its been awhile since i went through a set up.

someone with more experience will probably chime in, but i believe that is from the fact that you are getting rid of more water than what is coming into your tank. i put a ball valve on the drain pipe to give some back pressure to stop the gurgle, but don't do too much or your tank will overflow. Its kinda of a delicate process of figuring out how much to do.

Careful of putting a valve there. Last thing you want to happen is to have a snail get stuck in there and flood the floor. Make a silencer. Get a pill bottle. Find the size of tubing needed to fit over the piece that is stemming out of elbow. Put other end in pill bottle cap. Make another hole to put another piece of RO tubing in to. That should work. I can take a pic when i get home if needed.

I've thought about building a few of these myself.
You cant use a prefilter on those, correct?

Not so much, if you are talking about the filter tubes made of mesh plastic. I have not tried since my mechanical filter is in the sump. Worth a shot I guess.

i think for noe im going to play with the ball valve in the pipe. if that doesnt work ill try to use 1 of these ideas. thanks for all the great ideas

I built one of those gurgle busters for my tank. all I can say is WOW. My overflow is totally silent now

do you really even need that air tube in there?

yes, otherwise you will be gulping air along with the water. The tube supply a steady stream of air to the overflow.

heres what i have figured out so far... i mnot sure that makeing a silencer will work. the drain pipe is plumbed at the rear of the tank not the bottom. the pvc is external from a 90 about 4in from the top. its a brand new tank. any one have any more ideas?
