afex's 135g Rimless Cube

thanks everyone :)

does anybody happen to know if it is ok to fill the tank with RO/DI water, and then slowly add salt (via the sump) later?

mixing the saltwater externally first seems like it will be problematic given my setup, but i'm worried that having the rock and sand in plain RO/DI might cause me problems later.

Sounds good to me as long as you are adding salt to water rather than water to salt. The latter would initially make extremely strong salt water that could precipitate out some of the consituents.

So when is it getting wet?

i'll be getting the sump this weekend, and if my adapter for my RO/DI unit gets delivered this week i should be ready to make water then as well! my return pump is backordered, but i have a spare eheim 1260 i can use in the meantime.

Why don't you want to mix your salt water separately and put it in the tank?

mainly convenience. to fill up i can just put the output of my RO/DI into the tank directly and let it do it's thing. otherwise i have to do it 30g at a time.

Just found your thread...Super sweet tank! I like the stand too..great thinking. I wish I lived in a cool urban apartment with a super sweet tank. Im stuck in the orlando burbs! ahhhhh

Pretty great setup so far, I'll tag along. Forgive me if I missed something, but did you post the dimensions of the tank? I like the cube idea, just curious on the dimension. I'd also probably recommend more flow if you're predominately keeping SPS corals, but you can fiddle with that as you get chugging along.

thanks :)

tank dimensions are 36" L x 36" W x 24" H

yeah, hopefully two 6055s will be enough, but i'll have to just wait and see. never had one, so i don't know how wide the flow is.

It should be pretty good. With only 36", it's kind of hard for me to relate. I've got a pair of 6100s on a 60" tank, and honestly I'd like more. I've bought a pair of korallia 3's, but there are still some dead zones that I need to target, as they collect a lot of junk (particularly in the back corners). I'm considering getting a couple Tunze nanos or maybe even stupidly buying another controllable unit or two.

I've always done the initial fill of the tank with RO/DI water then added the salt. Never a problem, a lot of people do it that way.

I think that you'll need more tunze. I have a 60g cube (24^3) and I have 2 6055s and 2 6025s modded, plus my return. This gives me a ton of flow in the tank for my SPS.

You'll love the Profilux. I've had mine for over a year and I couldnt' be happier. I have the 4 doser unit as well. Great construction and customer support.

Also, have you considered turning the rock to face the other direction? Make the C open out?

Any updates?

nothing to look at yet. i'm about 90% done with my ATO and WC setup. still need to buy the 4 doser to finish it but some car work sapped my funds for the month.

the ATO would be 100% done, but i found that the glue i had would not attach the float switches to the inside of a brute trashcan. so i'll probably have to hook something up with a sheet of acrylic and some nylon screws.

thanks for the powerhead info.

yeah i can't wait to really put the profilux to the test.

so far i'm really liking the aquascape (it's all i have to look at atm) so i probably won't be changing it. we'll have to see if i still like it once i start mounting corals.

even though my components are high quality, i'm still sticking to a budget, which is why this thread has been a ghost town for a month.

but good news!

my november budget is underway with the purchase of my profilux 4-way doser! it arrived yesterday and i should be setting it up this week which means water in the tank!

also other great news is that greg at reefgeek.com let me know more ATI powermodules are coming back in stock in the next few weeks so i should have an early christmas present coming. :D

and it begins!

after setting up my doser i realized how long it would take to fill up 135g (shoulda thought of it sooner, heh) so we instead started a siphon.

i'll be making 30g batches of salt water and then getting the tank filled up during the week. i also need to glue all my pvc together since it i still just dry fitted
