afex's 135g Rimless Cube

afex, what about the beams that are on the top, they look rectangular; are those 1" X 2" or 2" x 4" ? what about the plywood, is it half inch or 3/4? i'm trying to build one just like yours for a tank the same size

i'll measure soon and post a reply.

although, your best bet would be to contact AGE directly, as they built the stand for me and would be able to talk dimensions

do you have the website for AGE? i haven't been able to find their site or contact information. any help would be greatly appreciated. also, how is you balling method going for you?

I am assuming that the steel was powder coated? I saw the pictures (looks great BTW). Reason why I am asking is since it's not stainless steel how confident are you that the salt will not penetrate the paint and get to the steel before it eats it and start to rust?

AFEX! We all need an update + PICTURES, STAT!

haha, sorry for the delay. i've been traveling for the holidays and was away from the tank.

the brown algae phase of the cycle hit just as i was leaving, which was bad timing. i came back yesterday and needless to say, i need to block out a few hours to get things cleaned up.

i've ordered a small initial cleanup crew. (10 cerith, 10 nassarius, 10 astrea, 10 scarlet reef hermit) which should help.

i'll post the nasty algae pictures later today :D

yes the steel stand is fully powder coated

What are the dimensions of your internal overflow?

the clean up crew i mentioned earlier got here on tuesday, but they are meant only as a first pass. i always do it incrementally so that i don't end up with too many after the initial algae rush is taken care of. i'll probably be ordering some more soon.

still need to do a full pass of measurements, but currently my pH is a little low (8.0) and my redox is acceptable (~330). speaking of, soon i will be able to announce my side project, but i need some more time to finish with a bit of the code :D

here are some current pics after a good glass cleaning

nice tank setup! The algae outbreak doesn't look bad at all considering that you didn't cycle the rocks in a dark container. At least you don't have macro algae and hair algae running wild.

yeah the algae isn't bad at all.

ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 0
phosphate: n/a
alkalinity: 4.5-5 meg/L (this is too high IMO)
calcium: n/a
pH: 8.1 i will be dosing some buffer (seachem balance) to raise it up.

on wednesday i began my prodibio dosing of biodigest/bioptim (biweekly). i immediately (the next day) saw an increase in my redox value, up to normal levels. i also noticed that dosing the seachem balance product to raise my pH showed a lowering of my redox. will do some reading to gain some understanding there.

next week i'll be out of town on a ski trip. my plan is to let the current algae be eaten up and die off (due to lack of food source). once i get back on the 9th i'll be ready to add my first fish!
