African Flameback Angel

I'm looking to add a dwarf angel to my collection & thinking about an african flameback. Looking for peoples experiences & post some pics if you have them.

I have no pictures ,but I had one for a few years. It was in a mixed reef 135 gallon. I had no issues. i lost him in a tank swap. beautiful fish.

Thanks!! This is going in a FOWLR so I'm more worried about their hardiness & temperment. It will be replacing a coral beauty I recently lost.

I would say it will be more aggressive than your Coral Beauty was. All members of the argi complex ( Cherub, Resplendent, Flamebacks) tend to be very aggressive in general.
But all fish are individual too..

I highly recommend the African Flamebacks.

I had a trio of African Flameback Angel for a couple of years before losing them due to a power problem to their Mixed reef tank, lossing all the fishes in that tank except the corals... They were not aggressive and tankmate with some other angels. They never pick on other smaller angels in there, like the 3 smaller 3" chaetodontoplus and a couple of Golden pygmy. Care was relatively easy in terms of Angel Care. Easy to get them to eat and pair up. Watching them zipping in and out through the tank was quite entertaining.

Since then, I replaced them with another pair a couple of months ago and they are doing great, get along fine with 4 Potters and a Multibarred. :)

When you get them, just make sure they don't have a blue tail. The Brazilian Flameback is more aggressive then the African. Also since they don't get large, the male I had was no more then 2.5" when he passed away, getting a pair or a trio would be great for your tank size.

Thanks for the responses & the pics. The CB it's replacing was a real PITA. It was always the first one to bully any new additions. It will be joining my other 6 angels; blueface, asfur, bluespot, imperator, flagfin, & regal. I want to add a new centropyge to replace the CB I lost & have always loved the flamebacks. I know the difference between a brazilian & an african & don't care for the brazilian. I need a fish with some gusto to be able to stand up to the other angels. Any body else have any more experience & pics??

ive had mine for a couple years. he was alone in my 40breeder for a year. introduced a mandarin and as expected he let him be. introduced a pair of bangaiis. he gave em a little business for a couple weeks but theyre fine now. introduced a little clown, same thing as the cardinals. He just does his own thing. he spends a lot of time swimming through caves. he does not seem to like my bright lights. He has been very healthy and is a good eater. i'll see if I can find some pics. I dont think this fish is at all aggressive compared to the flame angel and coral beauty that i have owned in the past.

mine loves my acans.... beautiful fish... worst nipper for a pigmy ive ever had if an sps id say yes... lps system... NO

ive had coral beautys, rusty, flame, and cherub

mine likes to taste lots of things in my tank, but has not done any permanent damage. ive seen it taste lps, sps, and softies. In any case this is for an angel tank.

Here's a, not great, pic of my Flameback before I traded it.
It was good with coral but was a mean little fish.
I removed it because it wouldn't leave the paired clowns alone in my 40B.

I located one at a LFS about an hour away from me. I'm leaving soon to go take a look at them and hopefully bring one home.

Great personality fish. I added one to my reef tank 6 months ago and it started nipping on corals so I had to change him to a FOWLR I have and his tank mates are a clown trigger and a maroon clown. He has done great in there and he is a very hardy fish.

What a bummer. I drove all that way to find out that the fish had jumped out of the tank overnite & was fish jerky on the floor when they went to catch it. It was a really nice speciman to about 2" versus the 3/4" ones you usually see. The search continues!!

I have one for few months and have no issues whit him(my tank is LPS&clam dominated). He was a bit shy for the first weeks, but now, he swim in the open and come to see me when I'm in front of the tank. It's a nice looking fish with a lot of personality, that's my favorite with my multibarred angel.:-)

I had one for a while until we lost him in a power outage. Very nice fish, ruled the tank he was in (20g). We have not replaced him at this time, we are waiting until we upgrade. I will post a pic tonight.
