AGA92 Corner Reef Tank Build

Not only in Winnipeg, you know the way to my house!

I invented my own workaround for the Tunze to get wavemaker like action. Rona sells a timer that randomly turns power on and off to simulate lights being used in your house. Hook a power bar up to 2 of these random timers and then two tunze in each powerbar and the water movement is completely random 24x7. Especially bouncing off the glass and/or having them face each other directly.

I hear you heard about our glass incident, I've never been more mad in my life. Ever!

Oh year, I ordered the lumenarc out of the US and it cost me a fortune in customs. Try and find it in Canada if you can.

LOL! Well, I would never have guessed from your ID.

We will have to come over and check it out.

Ya, I heard about that, what caused the leak and are you able to fix it?

With the dollar being the way it is, it might be worth it to get it shipped to a UPS Store on the other side of the border then go pick it up.

We have some friends moving to Fargo end of November and I already told them I plan on using them as a shipping depot. The nice thing is they come to Winnpeg quite often. Not sure what your timetable is.

Looks like it would cover most of the tank...
<img src=http://www.omnipresence.ca/images/blog/AGA92_Lighting_1.jpg>

Pretty affordable too, $450 US on lumenarclighting.com with the Reflector, Bulb, IceCap Ballast, and Air Cooling kit.

Anyone have the Air Cooling Kit? What is the noise level like?

I’m going to be picking up the aquarium at the end of the month.

I’m calling Jeff at LifeReef this afternoon to place our order.

I’ll be placing the orders for the other equipment (except for the light) in March.

The Live Rock will be coming for the last week of March, which is our “go live” date.

I just got caught up on this thread and it's looking good.

One other thing I forgot to mention was that I had two of the Hydor K4 and they weren't enough, so I modded them to use a bigger prop. After that, it was nice strong flow for me. I liked it a lot, so I wanted to pass along the idea.

I can't wait to see the Lumenarc over your tank. I've seen these reflectors at the LFS here and they are big reflectors. That should be sweet. Say, I was looking at your over the tank drawing and I was wonder if you had thought about rotating the reflector 45 deg to get more coverage at the corners.

Joe - Nice to have you along.

Chem-e - Two K4s, 3 un-moded Maxi-Het 1200s on wavemaker, and a Mag 1200 return pump should give me around 39x flow.

I have thought of rotating the Lumenarc, we'll see when we get it in September. :)

We started ordering stuff for the aquarium over a month ago so that we would have everything here in time for this week. Unfortunately, there were some production delays at LifeReef.com and the Overflow, Sump, and Refugium weren't going to be here on time. We were still able to get the aquarium setup and part of the start up process complete without them so we decided to move forward with our plans.

We started processing water on Monday. Because our water pressure is pretty low, I ordered a booster pump for the water filter. Unfortunately, the pressure switch that came with the booster pump wasn't working correctly, so for the first while the RO/DI unit wasn't making water as fast as we had hoped; only about one gallon per hour. I was working with Jeff from J&L Aquatics to try and get it to work but couldn't; they are sending us a new one.

<a href="http://www.omnipresence.ca/images/blog/AGA92/P4010071.JPG" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.omnipresence.ca/images/blog/AGA92/P4010071_TN.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.omnipresence.ca/images/blog/AGA92/P4010070.JPG" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.omnipresence.ca/images/blog/AGA92/P4010070_TN.JPG" border="0" /></a>

I figured out how to regulate the pressure from the booster pump without the pressure switch and the unit was making water at a rate of two gallons per hour. Given how dirty Winnipeg water is (I'm not sure what the tap TDS is but after the 1 micron sediment filter and the .5 micron carbon block the TDS is 65 ppm) and how cold the water is (35.5 F or 1.5 C) that is a pretty decent rate.

I cut the eggcrate and put it on the bottom of the tank and then put the base rock on it before putting in the sand. The South Sea Lace is awesome; lots of caves and nice pieces!

<a href="http://www.omnipresence.ca/images/blog/AGA92/P4010068.JPG" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.omnipresence.ca/images/blog/AGA92/P4010068_TN.JPG" border="0" /></a>

We were able to get 75 gallons of pure water processed and mixed with salt before the RO/DI unit stopped processing water late Wednesday. I guess Winnipeg's water is too dirty for a .5 micron sediment filter because it clogged pretty quickly. I called the place we ordered the RO/DI Unit from (MOPS.ca) to see if they had any .5 micron sediment filters as their website didn't list them. They told me that they don't sell them because the .5 micron filters are too small for Canadian water supplies and they recommended that I use a 1 micron filter. Not trusting only one source of information, I sent a message to AZDessertRat asking him what he thought. I also called a few places in town to see if they had any .5 micron filters. I talked to some guys at Arch Distributors that were very helpful. They said pretty much the same thing as the people at Mail Order Pet Supplies plus gave me a ton of information. Kara and I went there and picked up a 1 micron sediment filter and spent about 20 minutes talking to them about water. We were both really impressed by their knowledge and passion for this stuff.

Unfortunately, it appears that the .5 micron carbon block is clogged too as we were only able to get another 5 or so gallons made before the unit stopped making water again so I went back to Arch Distributors this afternoon for a new carbon block. That did the trick and we're back to two gallons per hour again. I talked to the guys at Arch Distributors about a long term solution and may add another pre-filter to the unit if we continue to go through pre-filters this fast.

Another roadblock we had is that J&L Aquatics didn't have any Tonga Deep Water live rock in stock so we aren't able to get the tank cycling. They are supposed to be getting in an order late this week or early next week so we're on the list for when it comes in.

So the tank is sitting at 3/4 full with only base rock and sand in it right now. We had the powerheads running but they were causing too much of a sand storm. The water is clearing now though.

I'll post more pictures when the order from LifeReef.com comes in, the live rock comes in, and/or the tank is full.

So glad I found your thread. I just picked up the same tank and I am looking to convert over from fowlr to reef. My first step will be lighting, let me know how the 400w HM works when its setup.

Live Rock

Live Rock

I woke up this morning at 4:15 AM to go to the airport before work to pick up the live rock we ordered from J&L Aquatics.<br>
It was supposed to arrive yesterday at 2:30 PM but WestJet bumped it to a later flight that wouldn't arrive until 11:00 PM meaning we couldn't pick it up until midnight. We tried to stay up to pick it up then but both of us were falling asleep at 9:30 so I decided to go before work this morning.<br>
When I got there, the guys at WestJet Cargo said that they had just been talking about our "fish". I told them that it wasn't fish but rocks and they laughed and said, "No wonder the box is so heavy!"<br>
I brought it home, we unpacked it, took pictures of the pieces, and then put them in the tank.<br>

There are some amazing pieces! Two have acropora skeletons on them. All of them are covered in different coloured coralline and macro algae. The last piece there is huge! It easily displaced about 3 gallons of water.

As you can see we just set everything in the tank. We put the rubble into a media bag until we get the sump and refugium going. We also have a few pieces of base rock left to put in.<br>
We're going to do some aquascaping tonight.<br>
I'll post more pictures later.

The type of rock is Tonga Deep Water from <a href="http://www.jlaquatics.com" target=_blank>J&L Aquatics</a>.

That piece of styrofoam is approximately 15" by 21".

The total weight of the shipment was 67 pounds.

We tried to do some aquascaping this morning but because the huge piece didn't look good supported by any of the base rock pieces we buried in the sand, we had to take out one of the pieces of base rock and partially bury that one. Unfortunately this caused a huge sand storm.

Knowing we should have water movement with the live rock, we kept the two Koala 4s on but turned off the three MaxiJet 1200s.

Are there any tips or tricks to clearing a sand storm faster or do we just have to be patient?

No point posting any new pictures until you can see something more than a white haze. :(

I'm prob a little late to the lighting discussion.... I have a 92G corner with a single ROIII pendant, 250W DE 15k, hung right from the center. It fits in the hood, and lights the whole tank, with plenty of light. LPS / Softies on the side, SPS / clams right down the middle. No temp problems either.

That 400 Lumenarc is a nice unit, but huge, I couldn't have fit it in the stock hood. I'll try and get some pics of the setup a little later...

We don't have a hood and if we decide to do one, I'll likely built one so that we can do some actinics without having a bunch of fixtures hanging from the ceiling.

Cool, pictures are always nice to see. :)

<b>Tank Update:</b> The sand storm has already started to clear so we might be able to continue aquascaping tomorrow.
