AGA92 Corner Reef Tank Build

OK- here are pics.. Here's a close up of the center. Clams / SPS / RBTA here. I've had to move all softies and LPS to the outer areas of the tank, just too much light here, things were literally shriveling up.. That clam was actually happier when he was lower in the tank. You can see the difference in my 2 clams in 2nd full shot. I'm going to leave him there for another couple of weeks to see if he acclimates though.

Here's a wide shot of full tank with hood. It's the Oceanic plastic hood. The corners look dim in this shot, but they are well lit. There is LPS in the left corner that is doing great. As are zoo's / polyps.

Here's a shot of the lighting with the hood off. I went with the ROIII because it was the lowest profile DE I could find with a decent reflector. I managed to fit it inside of the stock hood. The frame is 1x2 lumber with 1/8 ply gussets, all put together with Gorilla glue. I built tabs on the end to lock into the tank framing. The plan is to install 24" VHO actinic along each edge one day.

Hopefully this will demonstrate what 1x250 DE would look like though..

Tank Update

Tank Update

We finally have all the equipment setup and running as well as the live rock placed where we like it.

The tank is clearing nicely and the cycle is just starting. The diatom outbreak is beginning.

We're going to do the full battery of tests on the tank this weekend followed by a 15% water change.

No chaeto in there yet, but it's coming.

naprestsleep: Currently all we have is the stock strip light that came with the AGA92.

The current plan is to get the Lumenarc III at the end of Summer.

First tests on the new tank

First tests on the new tank

We did our first round of tests on the new tank tonight. We used all new Salifert tests. As this was the first time using them there may be some inaccuracy but we believe everything is on par as we received the expected results.

NH4 = 0 or <0.25 ppm (lowest reading/no colour)
NO3 = 25 ppm
Ca = 450 ppm (may be the most inaccurate as we forgot the little plastic tip)
pH = 7.9 (Milwaukee pH Tester)
Salinity = 1.026 (Sybon Refractometer)
Mg = 1395 ppm
Alkalinity = 9.9 dKH or 3.54 meq/L
PO4 = between 0 and 0.03 ppm
Temp = 82° F (Two American Marine Wireless Temperature Sensors, one in the display tank and the other in the refugium. Display reads 82.2° F and Refugium reads 81.7° F)

We followed this with a 15% water change so hopefully that will drop the NO3.

HumanIMDB
hwo was the order of LR from J&L? I plan on egtting soem from them but I liek to chose peaces that have good shapes and scared if I oder it I'll get a giant rock with no shapes or branches!

The rock we got from J&L was great!

We orderd one box (~67 pounds) of Tonga Deep Water.

We took pictures of each individual peice before putting it in the tank if you want to look at them you can see them earlier in this thread... :)

Yeah I skimmed over the pics and they looked good but I wnated to hear it from the horses mouth so to speak(I'm not calling you a horse BTW) :P
I plan on getting about 67lbs of tongs when my 65g corner diamond tank is ready to go so I'm glad to hear you liked it! I'll go back and take a good look at each pic.

I've dealt with J&L twice for diffrent orders but no livestock or liverock yet so I guess that will be next!

Cheers!

PM me if you want the full resolution images. :D

Based on what we received, I would recommend their rock without hesitation.

We've done a bunch of dry orders with them. The live rock was the only live order we've done so far but we will be getting our CUC from them in July/August.

Well I know for Tonga they sell it about $400 cheeper for 100lbs then I can get it cured at my LFS. And since I have a spare tank and 6 extra powerheads I will try curing myself next time and just buy a bottle of purple up to go with it!

Forgiv my ignorance but CUC I'm nto fimilar with what that means.
I got a feeling after you tell me I'll feel very sheepish but I got to clear the air...what does that stand for?

Remember to include shipping costs into your budget/price comparisons. ;)

I am not sure if they offer uncured rock, we didn't specify when we ordered and we got cured for the price on their website.

Stay away from Purple Up! We lost a shrimp because of it and have since learned not to use it. If you do want to use it, make sure you test for Iodine levels along with the other base parameters.

Clean Up Crew (CUC) :)

Yeah I toled you I would feel sheepish after I found out! :/
Their rock is cured your right but over shipping there is dye of and it has to be cycled again so lets just call it semi-cured rock.

Well the tank I'm using purple up now on is a empty tank!
I have several small LR peaces curing about a dozen 1-5lbs peaces of baserock so no worrys about anything dying in there!
:)

Remember, there are no stupid questions... :)

Yup...semi-cured.

Ah, we were talked into it by a friend/fellow reefer and were using it for a long time before our shrimp had a bad molt and didn't recover. We posted on RC when the shrimp was in trouble and were told that Purple Up can do that and is generally not recommended. We haven't used it since and our Coraline is doing just fine. :)

Thought I would post an update on how the tank is doing.

Here are some pictures from today; not much to see yet:

We haven’t done tests since the 5th of May, we’ve been busy and inclined to just let it do its thing. Evaporation rate appears to be hovering around seven or eight gallons per week.

We are up to ~170 pounds of rock in the tank; 100 base and 70 live. We may add another 20 lbs or so more to the refugium at some point.

There are lots, and I mean LOTS, of pods and we’ve started feeding 15 ml of DT’s Phytoplankton daily. We will step this up to 30 ml daily in a week or two. We are considering growing our own, but haven’t made any purchases yet.

We are still looking at getting the CUC in July or whenever we have a major algae bloom, whichever comes first.

We will likely get the light and the first round of inhabitants in September.

I have also been researching food recipes and feeding schedules so that we are well prepared for when we start adding our inhabitants.

As far as equipment and stocking lists go we have narrowed a few things down...

Lighting:
Coral Vue Lumen Bright SE Large Pendant (19"x19"x12")
Coral Vue 400 watt Dimmable Electronic Ballast
Coral Vue Reeflux 400 watt 12,000k SE Bulb

We found a local supplier for the light so we don’t have to worry about shipping/duty/etc., plus they are on par with the prices I’ve found online.

Clean Up Crew - Round 1:
5 - Astrea Snails
5 - Margarita Snails
5 - Cerith Snails
5 - Nassarius Snails
Blood Red Fire Shrimp

We have not had a significant algae bloom yet so we are going to start slowly and add more as needed.

Fish:
Pair of Green Mandarin Dragonets
Stonogobiops Dracula Goby with Alpheus Randalli Shrimp Pair (or some other Goby and Shrimp Pair)
Yellowhead Jawfish
Bicolor or Fridmani (Purple) Pseudochromis
Royal Gramma Basslet
Pair of Black and White Ocellaris or True Percula Clownfish
Kole Yellow Eye Tang
Yellow Tang

If sacrifices need to be made, the jawfish will be removed first, then either the Royal Gramma and/or the chromis, and finally the yellow tang.

Quarantine Tank:
30 Gallon Glass Breeder with sides, back, and bottom painted black
Fluval 404 with floss which has cycled in the sump and carbon
100 watt Ebo-Jager Heater
Koralia 2 Powerhead
A few pieces of PVC
Normal Output Fluorescent Light

The mandarins will go directly into the tank. The goby and jawfish will be quarantined for a month or more and then added. The chromis, royal gramma, and clowns will follow and will be quarantined for a month before being added to the tank. And finally the tangs will be quarantined and then added.

Coral/Inverts:
Green Carpet Anemone
Crocea Clam
Various Zoanthids (Man of Steel for sure)
Couple of (rare/unique) Ricordia
A few Large Polyp Stony Coral
One or two Small Polyp Stony Coral (Superman Monti for sure, maybe a “different” coloured Acropora)

We like the look of the carpet anemone more than the Rose Tipped Bubble Anemones. We don’t want any mushrooms (Corallimorpharians) in this tank as they have taken over the 10 gallon nano. We also don’t want any Xenia or Star Polyps in this tank.

The carpet anemone will be added with the clowns. The clam will be added late fall. The rest will be added as we find specimens we like. Still need to research dipping procedures for corals...

That's it for now, we will likely do more tests this weekend...
