Kara will kill me because we didn't clean it before I posted these... :)

Inside the stand, now with cord management! :)

The refugium doesn't look that green in person and definitely not when the lights are on.

Hrm, I guess I forgot to wrangle the fan cord...I'll do that after work.

Okay, now that things have settled down a bit with work and my summer holidays are over, it's time to let things get back to normal and start focusing on the tanks.

We seem to be losing the battle with hair algae...

A few weeks back, we did a week without the lights on the display tank after I pulled all the hair algae off the one rock it seems to be growing on and the two Koralia powerheads. I also added a Koralia nano to the fuge in the hope that the better flow would eliminate the little bit of hair algae growing in there.

Well...the rock is now covered again, as are the two Koralia powerheads, and the fuge has more hair algae in it than chaeto!

According to our last tests the parameters were as follows and that was before doing a 30 gallon water change (RO/DI water with Tropic Marin Pro-Reef):
Temp - 81.5°F
Sg - 1.026
pH - 7.9
NH4 - <0.25 (lowest reading on Salifert)
NO3 - 2
PO4 - 0
Ca - 420
Alk - 10.8
Mg - 1425

Depending on how this evening goes, I plan on yanking as much of the hair algae I can grab out of the tank and doing another round of tests.

The cleaning crew seems to be keeping up with every other kind of algae that may be growing in the tank. When I'm in the tank, I'll put as many Astrea and Margarita Snails as I can on the rock with the GHA on it and maybe move a couple more of them to the fuge.

I know the stock AGA Strip Light is probably not the best for reducing algae growth but it's all we have right now and we probably won't be getting the Metal Halide System until November or later...too many other things on the "have to buy" list that aren't aquarium related.

Depending on what Jeff at LifeReef.com has in stock, I may break down and buy a set of the filter cylinders and run some phosphate and nitrate remover just to see if that helps.

We definitely won't be adding any coral until we get the MH and the GHA under control. We will likely proceed as planned with our live stock purchases at the end of the month though, depending on availability. Maybe round two of the CUC to get more Astrea and Margarita Snails as well.

Stay tuned for updates as the happen. :)

Possibly time to re-read my blog on controlling algae:D

Yep, doing everything but "running carbon and phosban in phosban reactors".

Now that I have more time to spend on the tank (regular water changes, cleanings, maintenance, etc.), perhaps it will just die off like it is should...if I don't see any improvement in a month or two, I'll get the reactors.

I'll probably pick up another powerhead for the fuge in the near future. Not sure what the flow rate through the fuge is; off shoot of the Mag 1200 return pump with a ball valve ~25-35% closed. The Koralia Nano is rated at 240 GPH and the fuge is ~11 gallons.

Only have the Astrea and Margarita Snails that eat algae...didn't get any Turbos because many of them are the cold water variety that don't last long in reef tanks.

I haven't tried to keep any so I don't have any personal experience with them, that's just what I've read many times on here from people who "should" know. :)

May pick up a seahare tonight, we'll see.

I didn't get to the LFS until 15 minutes before closing so I just picked up the bucket of salt I needed to do a water change this week.

I had a quick look around and saw what I believe is a huge seahare. If that is the size of them, I don't think I'll be able to keep one for too long as it will consume everything in the tank in less than a day.

If I get time, I'll go back and have a better look at them.

Hey HumanIMDB
You may want too look for a dwarf sea hare so they don't go though all your HA in short order and then starve to death.
Even the dwarf may get it all in a few weeks so be sure to have a LFS that you can take it back to after its gone though your HA!

Cheers

Looks good. I love your rock structure. Tell Kara, she done good! (sorry for the delayed post) I love the look of the corner tank. I have a big fireplace in thecorner of the great room of my home, and have said tons on times, I would love to have put a huge corner tank there instead.

you going to add fish one by one or in a small batches imdb?

We're on the lookout for the Mandarin(s) now.

We'll probably start getting the equipment for the Quarantine System in the next month or so, though we might have to wait until the New Year.

If we can find a goby and shrimp pair and/or a jawfish, we might add them at the same time or soon after adding the mandarin(s). Due to some other things going on before the end of the year, I may not have the time to quarantine the goby and shrimp pair and/or the jawfish.

After that, we'll wait until we have the QT setup and running before ordering the Pseudochromis and/or Royal Gramma Basslet. They will go through the six to eight week quarantine (assuming no issues) and then will be added to the tank.

The clowns will be ordered when the previous fish go into the tank and will be quarantined as above before going into the DT. The tangs will be ordered when the clowns are added to the DT and will then wait to be added to the DT.

Somewhere in there, we'll order the Metal Halide pendant and maybe a few of the corals we're looking at...possible Christmas presents. :)

That's the plan now anyway.

As for an update, it appears that the green hair algae is in decline and/or the CUC is making headway in the battle.

I am seeing more and more pods now that I'm feeding phytoplankton daily. I want to make sure that we see lots of pods before adding the mandarin(s).

I have the water made up for a water change, just need the time to do it; probably this weekend.
