So i'm at my wits end with this algae issue. Ive tried manual removal/increased water changes w ro/di water/increased mag with Tech-m/increased CUC and it all seems to just "limit" algae growth. All my parameters are in check with the only exception being magnesium, which is hovering around 1800 for the algae issue. My tds is 9, which from research wouldnt be the main reason for my algae issues. Ive posted some pics below. LMK what you guys think. This hobby has gone from challenging and exciting to frustrating and im afraid that im close to throwing in the towel. The only option i havent tried is a phosban reactor. Help please!!!!

A phosban reactor may help. What are you feeding? I'd take a look at what you are feeding.

Some things tend to be high in phosphates and nitrates. That TDS may be a problem. Is that 9 all phosphates, nitrates, or something else undesirable?

Try some GFO either in a sock or in a reactor (better). You can spot treat the algae (unless it's bryposis, can't really tell from the pic) with hydrogen peroxide (3%). There is a thread here if you do a search showing fantastic results with peroxide. I treated a rock with Xenia on it from my old tank and I was astounded at how good a job it did. And it never came back! The thread will give you a lot of info.

water changes w ro/di water

...

My tds is 9

TDS on the output side of an RO/DI of 9 is a problem. It might not be THE problem fueling your algae bloom, but I would absolutely fix it. When was the last time your DI was changed? Is it a vertical or horizontal chamber?

The classic answer to this - look at all your inputs (food, water used for water changes and topoff, additives, ANYTHING you put in your tank) and your outputs (filtering, skimming, turf scrubber, macro algae in a refuguim, etc). Algae problems are essentially an imbalance somewhere between inputs and outputs. You need to either find and eliminate the input that's adding the nutrients, or increase your outputs to handle the nutrients you're putting in.

I'll 3rd a tds of 9 being a main issue. If you can get that down to 0 and add a phosban reactor I 'd be willing to bet you'll have your problem far behind you.

Do you run a good skimmer?

I would fix the TDS, and then try some phosphate remover as others have said.

I've gotten rid of algae like that in the past with just phosban and high Mag. Tough it out!
